With the cost of electric rising and hps etc I wondered whether there was any kind of set up that would:could use solar panels instead. I haven't seen anything on research but would think this may be possible if can get strong enough and the right type of lamps etc

I know there are less that will save in expense etc but of there's any kind if power cut I'm my apartment abroad whilst I'm not there it could damage them

Anyone any ideas/thoughts?

Sure, you could use solar power if you have enough panels. But you'll also need some storage capability to store power for those times when the sun isn't shining or a way to easily switch between solar and electricity. I would weigh the cost of the panels and adequate storage against the cost of electricity. I wouldn't be surprised if the cost were prohibitive.

Muddy is right, solor panels and storage equipment would cost way more than lights.Growing mj cost money but you can always sell some weed and easily get your money back. And it also saves money by not having to buy it.:bong:

I understand but last leccy bill was 400 quid but that was hps. Running two lights. I was thinking if sOmeone clever enough to link up led or cfl to solar (or even hps)then we wouldn't have to worry about that so much. You see my main problem is that I'm away from my house abroad quite often and there are sometimes power short ages where the electric can be off completely for 24 hours. But with solar power this wouldn't happen. I know with solar power they will charge and keep in reserve for the evening and will run off a 12 volt battery but not sure whether enough power could be run through them
Napkins for instance have had sales recently and the cost of the panel kits seem to have come right down in price in the last year and I'm thinking this may be the way forward.
I know what you're saying by can always sell some but if it's costing less to grow you may not need sell any and smoke more

I had an idea from a commercial I saw on tv not long ago. I can't remember the name of it though. It was round portal thing that let natural light in from roof. They were advertising them for closets, or maybe a pantry or something. but I don't think there were any solar panels. Just lets the lumens in I guess. Probably not so good on cloudy days but with some supplemental lights it should work fine. Anyone else see these before?

ya I have.I also thought about it.would work well I would think in the right location.it will also take a fair bit of work installing as you would have to pull up shingles cut the roof decking reshingle and cut the drywall in the ceiling/Retexture.In the end I figured it was easier to just use the hps. but If you lived in the right location and your roof was pitched in the right direction and you didn't mind the cost time and work to install...then ya I think they would work. As for solor power I actualy know a guy lives off grid in Canada.he grows but has to use florescents .somthibng to do with the inverters not working well with the ballasts for HID's.

You could build yourself a solar cell for pretty cheap. Ebay always has used solar panels and you can rig them up to car batteries for storage purposes.

Yeah that would be quite a job to install as you say with the shingles and all. Probably costly too. But if you are planning on building on a room or maybe growing in a shed or something it wouldn't be too tough to install. It's like a disguised sun-roof. Let's light in but no prying eyes. Probably keeps a lot of heat out too.
