Hello growers and smokers alike! Long time smoker, first time grower, and total forum noob.

Since I've now got an abundance of free time, despite still working (thankfully!), I thought it might be one of the best ideas I've ever had - grow my own green!

I had a few issues in the beginning though, mainly "how?", which then became "where?".

The "how" portion has been greatly helped by the posts in this forum, among other resources collected from the web.

This is what I've bought/got so far:
    - DIY Grow box (pics to follow, more info below)
    - 2x 300W Olafus full spectrum LED (found the pair of these at a bargain, but I think I only need one)
    - Seeds - 2x Auto Fresh Candy, 2x Auto Kryptonite, 1x Auto NL
    - Soil + perlite
    - NUTES! Advanced Nutrients Micro, Grow, and Bloom 1L ea
    - Rhizotonic 250ml + Rooting powder (incase i ever try photosensitive and fancy cloning....or i'll just clone regular plants!)
    - Strong twine, for LST
    - in progress, a logger project for temperature, humidity, air quality, and light level. It's even got a dashboard so I can see it on my phone!
    - in progress, I have an ESP32-CAM on its way, so I hope to be able to share a timelapse or two with you all soon

Now the grow box was a little invention brought on from a night of heavy smoking (I needed the help) - I recently moved house, and with that I bought a Casper mattress. I ended up keeping the box for chucking my dry recycling in (because I am waaay too lazy to step out the front door to the recycling bins). I had already cut the height down a bit, unfortunately, but I still reckon it'll make a mean growbox.
In my super-high state I coated the inside in tin foil, and then a few days later when my lights arrived restructured the bottom to hold one 300w light.
I'm hoping the photos will make it clearer - the idea is to put it on top of the plant.
    This gives me a total grow space of 40cm x 40cm x 78cm (~ 15.7" x 15.7" x 30.7"), with an additional height of 15cm (6") for light clearance.
I plan to, at most, have one plant on the go at any time. Maybe have a seedling in tandem with a very mature plant.
I'm imagining some very careful LST and a healthy dose of luck but if I can get the plant wide enough it might be okay.

I have SO many questions before I pop the first of many beans, but I'll do in sections! I have got a copy of Muddy's Autoflowering Guide, which I'm going to give another read now I've got a moment to breathe.

    Some grow box related questions:
    1.
Do I, realistically, have enough space to grow? I just went ahead and made the box, didn't fancy forking out for a tent!
I've been taking measurements and the like over the past day with the light in place, and at a distance from the panel of ~80cm the plant can potentially receive 14k lux, up to the limit of the sensor (65k lux) at ~30cm.
One of my unknowns is the pot size. I've seen a lotta soil grows on here with 2l pots. I bought a 35cm diameter pot and it is HUGE! (compared to the box) Obviously, I need to take this into account when getting the plant's light requirements correct. Also need to make sure there's enough vertical height for them, I've heard the auto nl (dr rays seeds) can get a little taller than the dwarf other two.
    2.
Odor control is still an outstanding requirement before I begin. I'm not sure how smelly my strains will be, but better safe than sorry. I have scavenged the two "best" computer fans in my junk bin, and plan to acquire some carbon sheets (like for aquariums) and setup the exhaust fan with a square of filter.
Will this be enough, or am I better off investing in a higher cfm fan and a proper carbon filter or something?
    3.
On the topic of intake/exhaust, does it really matter where I cut these holes? What I'm really asking, is if there is a benefit to having intake at the top, exhaust at the bottom, or any combination of the options.
    4.
Have I shot myself in the foot by only building the box to accommodate 1x 300w light?

I'm sure I'll think of more grow box questions, but if you managed to stick around in this post for that novel, you've earned a hit of whatever you got lying next to ya.
Please ask for any other info you need. I can use all the help I can get - if I could share the end result with you all I would. :smokeout:

    Happy growing!

P.S. I bought a wildflower seed pack and two stony seeds (that were way too big to be cannabis) have germinated, and look EXACTLY like it right now! That's the seedling you see in pics.
P.P.S. This is my first forum post, so I am not sure where the images will be placed. Please excuse the crudeness of the box - it's very much a work in progress and evolving by the day. I would greatly appreciate it if anyone has any advice for improving it, most notably in solving these issues:
    - Reduce light bleed at bottom (see photo) I have an idea for the top light bleed
    - Maybe a viewing window?
    - Or, potentially, creating a more permanent bottom frame and adding a door? This would solve the bottom light bleed
P.P.P.S Like I said, no idea how to forum correctly. If you think this is better elsewhere, feel free to move!

  • that pot might be a wee big, lol...jus sayin :coffee: ppp

I thought they might be :face: Good thing I've got a tray of pepper seedlings that would suit em perfectly. And they can go outside lol

I can't post beautiful bud shots just yet, so I hope I can satisfy you all with a couple macros of the mystery seedling.

  • ooookay so the inline fan kit doesn't look like it's ever going to arrive...think the company collapsed because quarantine :( glad I bought using my credit cards, so I'll have to get the money back somehow.

In the meantime I've bought another fan filter kit - hope that arrives soon because growth is really accelerating on the mystery seedling, and it needs some airflow!
It's starting to not look like a mystery anymore :crying:

    DAY 15

(pardon the bad phone pic - you'd think £700 would get you a decent phone...)

    CON DAY 10
  • Righto peeps, I've bought a 12l bucket for my first auto grow.

I'm afraid I bring good and bad news about the mystery seedlings. Unfortunately something got the better of the one outside before I had a chance to bring it in and pot it up today (should've checked before filling the pot up :face: ).
Other one has been potted up into a slightly bigger pot - I haven't moved it into my bigger auto pot as 1. I don't really care about this one, I'm not ready for a photo grow and 2. I'm still not convinced it's even canna!
Although, if it is canna, is it worth watering it for the next week or so with a 1/4 strength Canna Rhizotonic?

    See pics.

    CON DAY 21
  • Happy Tuesday everyone! (It is Tuesday, right?)

Not a lotta progress for the actual growbox construction. Been messaging the seller of my filter kit every day now to no response. I will give them till Friday till I forcefully take the money back!
Have been working on the control box instead - it'll have camera so I can spend all day watching them grow, and some additional hardware for sensor logging and intake fan control.

Mystery seedling is doing great, by the looks of things - please see the photos for more. I can see what looks like where the preflower portions of the plant will be growing which was very interesting to see. Also, the final picture is of what looks like root nodes coming out of the stem, very close to the bottom. Think it's asking me for a bigger pot!!

Really hoping this one turns out to be a male - at least then, I can harvest some pollen and fertilise some of my first grows for unlimited seeds!

Place yer bets - male or female?

    CON DAY 22
  • Was planning on starting very light nutes today, 0.5ml/l of each, but it's not looking the best right now :(
Woke today to a droopy plant, so I gave it about 200ml plain water but still looking droopy. I've taken her out the box for now & will see how it does till bedtime.

Temps have been ~22-24c with lights on and ~21-19c at night with humidity having, now that I'm lookin at the charts, really spiked over night for some reason - peaking at 81% ! Since that though, I've put the box on stilts for passive air venting, and put a couple fans blowing through.

I see two roots at the bottom of the pot - gunna move it into the 12l bucket at the weekend.

Any thoughts? I really need that damn fan filter kit to arrive. Bought one from somewhere else & picked up some bargain nutes.

    CON DAY 27
  • Realised I had something of a superpower today....nothing I do to this plant really matters - as much as I'd love to keep Con alive (oh yeah, decided on "Con" because when it comes to finding out sex I can switch to Connie or Connor or something) it doesn't matter if I kill it by accident, as it's just an excuse to pop that first damn auto I'm itching to grow!!

With that knowledge I potted Con up & have prepared a Rhizotonic watering for later on this evening to help it deal with the stress and root loss (oops). Hoping it's not as prone to falling over now it's a little lower in the pot. Will top off if needed in a few weeks. Couldn't remove the stick from the beginning because the roots are hugging it tight.

Looking okay so far - slow, but okay. Can't wait to top it!

Safe to assume it's an indica?

    CON DAY 32
  • Progress is good! However, the bottom most leaves are not looking too healthy - is it because they are blocked by higher leaves for light?

Have been watering every 2 days with ~0.5ml/l AN 3 part, about 300-400ml each time, depending on how dry it is.

Had my fan filter kit order cancelled by the second store (first one still "pending") due to stock issue, waiting on them to come back in stock :( can't veg without it.

Bonus update - spotted this fella whilst weeding the wildflower patch!

    CON DAY 33
  • Con's been praying to the light today, temps have been a bit cooler (and humidity higher) than usual despite the local sun.
Pot feels very heavy at the moment so I'm going to hold off on watering for an extra day - see if Con asks for a drink. I think it's very useful to learn how the plant behaves given known conditions.
I've raised the height to see if it likes it - we're at about 45 cm from light to tip of canopy, with one 300w LED panel.

I'm wondering if I should top now, at the red line in the image below? I'm not certain where to call the "4th node"!

Really looking forward to some LST with this. I'm in love with the idea of bonsai's and the speed of this plant is captivating to the imagination.

    Thanks for checkin' in :smoking:

EDIT: Forgot to say, on a 20/4 light cycle at the mo
