I will be starting my first grow in about six years. I had success with bubbler buckets in the past, and I will stick to what I know.
I have the seeds ordered, and I have gathered my old gear. I am going through everything today to make sure everything is still in good shape.

I am going to go ahead and put all this down to organize my thoughts and get as much feedback as possible.

I currently have on hand the following:
  • Tent
  • Buckets
  • Lids
  • Hydroton
  • Nutrients (General Hydroponics FloraDuo)
  • PH down, PH up
  • PH meter (need to test this)
  • TDS meter (never figured out how to make use of the readings)
  • 1x Fluro Wing (needs a new bulb, 200W maybe?)
  • 1x135 watt Blackstar LED UFO
  • 2x 2ft 24wT5's
  • 2x dual-outlet aquarium pumps
  • 2x single outlet aquarium pumps
  • 10' 1/4 clear airline
  • Kill A Watt Power Strip
  • 4" inline fan
  • Phat Filter
  • Measuring tools ( spoons, and syringes)
I still need to get some new airstones and an RH/Thermometer and probably a couple of other things. I'll know what else I need tonight.
I would also like to get an EC meter. I never "got" the TDS thing... I'll have to do some research on that. I think there was supposed to be some way to convert the TDS to EC, but I don't remember. I never even bothered with it. I was looking at the Oakton PCTS 5 as it appears to be an "all in one" solution for what I might need. If my ph meter turns out to be unreliable, then I will probably go with that.

I will be growing "off-site," meaning, not at my house.
I have a good friend who is an older USAF Vet, and he has offered to let me use some space at his home. He has a very good-sized piece of land with a creek, and he has always grown bag seed outside, so I hope to teach him a thing or two about how much of a difference the details can make.

This afternoon we will be getting things set up and checked out. I want to get everything set up and running so I can test the power consumption. I already know the fan is going to be the most significant power drain, but I hope the winter temps will mean I won't need it for cooling purposes.

I'm off to load the truck and head over there now!

wait... no, I mean I'll be starting my new grow very soon, but I haven't grown anything in about 6 years!:baked:

I have the tent set up and the lights, fan, pumps and power strip put together. I still have more prep to do though.

I'm not quite up to speed on current lighting trends, so, for now, I will be getting another Fluorowing style light and some new 200w CFLs which I'm hoping should come in around $100 altogether. I think I am going with two of those angled at 45 degrees, and the 135w LED UFO in the middle at this point and later, maybe positioning the two T5's near the top of the bucket pointed up to hit the bottom of the canopy?
I have a couple of old 400/750 watt MH/HPS fixtures, and a bunch of good 4ft T12's, but I don't think all that is necessary for this 4x4 tent.

Today I will need to look at power. The wiring is sketchy at this place so I need to be careful of that. I'll figure out my total power usage and see what I need to do. I'm pretty sure I'm going to end up having to run a new circuit and subpanel, and that might be the easiest thing to do in this situation. I know I have new wire and breakers, and probably can get my hands on a second-hand panel box for free or cheap.

Welcome home,,, been quite the layoff,,, ain't going to tell an old pro what to do, but I would consider spending the cfl money on led lighting

Thanks for chiming in man. :pass: I am a long way off from being a pro, but thanks for the confidence!

I have looked a little bit, but I was hoping to use what I've got. When I was here last, very few were using LED, it was new, and everyone was a skeptic. I know that is not the case now.
I understand LEDs would be ideal, but income is limited, and I already have some equipment, and getting new lights would pretty much mean what I have now would go into the trash because there would be no other use for them.
Maybe after this first grow, I could invest $200-$300 on lighting, but for now, the budget is going to be about $100 for lights.
Right now, I have a 3x3 tent in a 5x5 "closet" type area. I hope to be able to expand to fill that area without a tent over the next year.

Hi pal,,, I all for using what's in the cupboard I still have a 300w cfl sat in a box somewhere and the old blurple sat ready to fill in if needed

Those are big spaces for me, started in a cupboard and moved to a 2x4 lol

Yes, led for growing no longer in future its arrived and getting better and cheaper

I ain't a hydro grower either so I totally no help but looking forward to the journey,

hmmm...well, jus chimin in here, but fwiw, me one o' them sillee old school foolz who luvz & actually preferz fluro lighting, so...:rolleyes2: plantz luv it too & will veg like crazy under it, and while i admit they'd do better durin flower under sumthin stronger, the fluro can also handle that phaze too, if u don't mind sacrificing a bit of density & mebbe takin a bit longer to finish  jus me own 2 ctz & take w/salt plz ;) ppp

Welcome back to growing. Thrilled you are working with a vet! Subbed for this one.
Yeah, he's an old hippy. Cool guy. I've known him for 22 years; since I was a teenager. He loaded bombs on planes. He has lots of good stories from Europe involving mushrooms and hash.

I had some good runs under CFLs, but they were in small cabs and practically sitting in the plants. Most of the gear I have, I have never used. I got it from a friend a few years ago and its been in a crate in my closet.
