I don't think there is any harm going a few inches closer.
I kept them at that height because I had 2 side by side (one over each plant) and didn't want the overlap from the 2 lights causing issues.

The one in the back (FP#1) is now moving very nicely indeed.
It is almost catching up to the FP#2 now.
Trichs are getting cloudy, but no sign of amber yet (apart from one or 2 I spotted and then lost before I could take the pics )

I've never grown but I have trimmed - vinyl gloves+freezer=hash.

That sounds like the better way to do it. When I did it speed was more important than quality, so no delicacy whatsoever.
