Just want to say thank you to all the great people on here and all the great info.

I'm hoping to get a seed run done in the green house and be ready for next season with enough seeds to keep me well in to the future. I'm on the Coast so I think my biggest battle will be mold. Hopefully the Jems natural defenses and my spray bottle might be able to win through if the winter rains stay at bay. I may have a light to finish them off under at the end but I might not too.

The first 5 Purple Jems are choosen

soaked and sunk over night.

seed soil.jpg

I choose this as my seed starter mix looks like peet vermiculite and "organic yucca based wetting agent" Next time I will go with non-fert compost for cost.

seed contain.jpg

I had these containers around they seemed deep enough to start.

seed bottom.jpg

The bottoms are so open I had to cover them with paper to keep the dirt in. Lots of room for the roots to drop down when they are ready.

Added Jars till the Propagation dome was ready.

Barely 24 hr's go by an J1 springs up.
J2 started to come up but I thought the seed just did not get pressed down enough and covered it with a little dirt.

J2's return the following day-ish and J1 gets some leaves.

Here we are today J1, J2, J3 The other two have not popped yet but there is still time. I currently have them in a propagation dome under a 2 ft t-12 double bulbs that are questionable in their age, but I can put it right on top of the dome. J2 has been running sideways since she re-emerged and I totally just dropped my camera on J1 although she appears to be fine for now.

I'm planing to do an amended soil - water only grow. When the plants get bigger I will open up the paper on the bottom and tier plant them into 3 gallon pots. The bottom 3rd will be amended soil. The rest will be most likely a mix of light potting soil and FFOF.

I went off the cuff at my local nursery which had all the amendments you could need in bulk. Here is what I made. I would appreciate any feed back now as the soil is still cooking and I may still be able to adjust it.

The base soil is: almost 3 cf total
1.5 cf black gold potting mix
1 cf black gold compost
28l black gold perlite
base soil.jpg

To that I mixed in:
1.5 c Glacial rock dust
2 c Oyster shell powder
2 c Dolomite - Powdered
.5 c Epsom salt
3 c bone meal
1.5 c blood meal
2 c Cal Phos
1.5c Green Sand
2 c Fish meal
2 c kelp meal
1 c Dr Earth Organic-7 4-4-4
2 c alfalfa meal
2 gallons of my own compost

I watered it the day after mixing with 2 gallons with small amounts of molasses, fish emulsion, Microbe brew, Root drench, Super Endo 130k that was bubbled for a bit and left to sit over night. Dr E also has bacteria and fungal love. I kinda went kid in a candy store style with the mix

Well that's about it for now. I'll let you know how it goes. Please let me know what you think.

Thanks Kudo I am very excited about the Jems too.

Here are the ladies today.
At five days old here is J1 I put her next to a lighter. Would this be considered excess stretching?

Here is J2 she is planted in the middle of the pot and I put a little more dirt on it since it came out. It has been heading sideways and now is moving it's way up the side of the pot. Will this cause it any problems?

J3 starting to look like J1

Ahh, an organic Purple Jem grow.. looking forward to it Torch. Yea... they do have a bit of excess stretch for sure. Might wanna zip those lights a little closer.

And fill the rest of that container up with dirt to make sure it doesnt start to fall over. Should help alot

Thanks for the advice JEMman I've been through your grow logs many times now. I'm convinced my bulbs are too old to be useful. I will find something better for lights, as right now, closer is not an option. Topping up the dirt...had not thought of that. Hopefully J2 can be propped up without damage.

So what kind of lights are you using? If you can even go buy a couple of cheap cfl's, i've seen good results with them, and you can keep them ultra close.

JEMman --I was using some t-12 floro tubes. The bulbs were ancient, BUT! I remembered a box in the garage with a 150W HQI MH that I had never opened. Someone gave me a light for a reef tank; the bulb is probably 10k -15k temperature too blue but should work great for veg. Game on!

So I think I'm about day 5 average

J1 against a lighter WAY stretched yikes. Looking at some the same age in the Jems competition these are tall girls. I'm gonna shorten them up.

j1-4.jpg

Quazi-Moto J2 finally got a good pic of her running. The seed is sprouted in the center of the pot then up the side (buried) and back. Strangely for all the effort she appears to have the largest leaves out of them.

j2-4.jpg

J3 is just doing her thing not quite as tall as J1

j3-3.jpg

I then added a sprinkle of mycorrhiza and a little more dirt to keep them intact. J2 was not a problem and seems to be in a better spot now. The new light is much hotter and I will need to begin watering. I have been misting up until this point. I'm also hoping the warmer temp might get those other two beans to sprout.

Alright... yea, that should help out some. I dont know if you're planning to repot them when they get a lil bigger, but if so just bury them right up too the leaves and that will get rid of all that stretch. The better light should help that to slow down too.

Is that a mary plant behind the seedlings?

Yep I have some photo cuttings in the propagation dome with the seedlings. Some of them are finally rooting so the light helped them as well. I was probably going to tier pot them rather then re-pot them but hopefully they will not need the extra support by then.
