Is this a good seed starting mix? Went to the grow shop and it was recomended by the store clerk so I started doing a little research on the mycorise, and it seems to be pretty beneficial. I did notice that it had peat in it and was wondering if this would mess ph up? Does it start at a predetermined ph level?

Was planning to add perlite and wormcastings to the mix...anybody know anything about this? I used FFOF my last grow with decent success but the pro mix isn't ferted so I wanted to try that from start to finish adding my own nutes.

Muddy uses pro mix I believe. He could answer your ph question.

Couple things about peat. 1 it will degrade and become more compact cutting off some air flow. Autos will prob. Outrun this problem. 2 peat clings tO water and won't give it up to the plant. So never let it dry out.

Pro-mix is good from seedlings all the way through the grow. It is pH'd to good numbers and it is nute free. So, you'll need to add ferts about the time they sex.

It should have plenty of perlite and vermiculite in it already. If you want to add worm castings, that won't hurt anything and it has beneficial microbials. I used this stuff or metro mix on all my outdoor grows. :peace:

P.S. JEMman, I haven't priced this stuff in a few years. How does it compare to FFOF?

Nothing wrong with mixing in a bit more perlite.
With the worm castings, you could either mix in or you could mix with water & water it in through out the grow.
If mixing into the soil, don't mix in more than 10-20% is what is usually recommended. I would lean more towards the 10% for autos.

Nice...thanks TBM I think that I'm going to just water it in. Didn't have a clue that you could do that.

And Joe, I think they are pretty close in price range, not completely sure as I didn't actually buy it yet. The purchase will probably be made when they open up today.

Thai, do you have a rough estimate as to how much worm castings i should add per water? Like half a cup?

I started using Pro-Mix about a year ago on the advice of a long time (35 years) grower. For seedlings I use straight Pro-Mix. Once sexed I put the females in a mix of 6 parts Pro-Mix, 2 parts worm castings, 1 part perlite. To that I add some bone and blood meal, epson salts and kelp. pH straight out of the bag is around 6.8-7. My mix usually pHs to right about 6. It's been so consistent that I didn't bother testing pH anymore. But recently I've had to switch from worm castings. Can't get them in bulk anymore. I'm now using composted cow manure and it's pH is lower than the castings, so now I need to add some lime to the mix.

Pro-Mix comes with either Mycorise or anti fungal. I use the Mycorise. I've talked with the people at Premier Horticulture and on their suggestion, add some additional mychorizzal fungi to the mix since I'm adding the castings/manure. Just be cautious if you use chemical nutes. Too strong and they can kill the fungi.

I prefer BX for outdoors, HP for indoors. BX hold a little more water, a little to much IMO for indoors. Also, Pro-Mix does contain some macro and micro nutrients, enough for seed starting. I usually starting a mild veg nute at about 2 weeks.

3.8 cu. ft. compressed bale is $25.88 for BX at the local green house supply. HP was about $2 more a bale.

Thanks Muddy sounds like a good system. I wish that i could find the 2.8 around here tho as it is pretty much all that I need. Went to my shop today and all they had was the 3.8 cu ft. and that thing is pretty huge. Kinda worried about being seen carrying that big of a bag into my townhouse. The 2.8 is the size that I had of FFOF and I just carried that inside of my workout bag. But as I've been checking cant seem to find the smaller bag anywhere around here. So I guess I'll have to think of something before I start my next grow. Might just try to create a mix from scratch, tho I know that requires a lot of materials to purchase. Kinda up in the air at the moment.

Yes, the 3.8 cu. ft. bales are pretty big. Check the Premier Horticulture web site, they have a dealer locater there. Maybe someone else has it. Or bring it into your town house under the cover of darkness!

I use promix, and re composted promix.

It's great man.. The results speak for them selves.

I get better results from the re composted stuff, than out of the bag. But there is nothing wrong with it.

Edit:
I also add Dolomitic lime to the re composted stuff. I used to add some to the out of the bag soil too. But i tried a run without and there was no difference out of the bag. Once peat starts to compost, is when it gets more acidic.

So Bone meal gives you Phosphorous, Blood meal gives you Nitrogen what is the epsom salts for? And the kelp is for Potassium..? where can that be found at?
And do you just stir all of this stuff together? I heard that the blood and bone take awhile to get into the soil good, do you mix these things up like a week or so before you even transplant into it?
Thank you

And Thai.... I might just have to take you up on that offer there. Currently still figuring out exactly how im going to do things.
