Pollen Collection And Long Term Storage

sweet deal. thanks for the info bailer. im not going to be storing it i just want to be able to pick which males pollinate which females. im only going to pollinate the lower branches so i can still get some good herb too. this way i can test the herb as i am using a couple random seeds. if there are multiple males im going to try and pollinate different sections of the different females with the different males. if that makes sense. should be a good experience. one more question to whoever can answer. if i accidently drop some pollen in my room or take too long to get some of the males out how long will the pollen be viable. im going to try and stagger my plants dont want my next grow to get contaminated(lack of a better word).

Awesome post. I use the q tip straight from frozen method as well and it works great for me too. Double bagging is also a good way to buffer your pollen from sudden temp changes. I collect my pollen, sift it to remove veg matter and toss in a few grains of rice (you are spot on about that moisture bit), put it in a freezer bag and then put the freezer bag in one of those little food tubs with the air tight lid.

Overkill? Perhaps, but I'm lockin in the freshness baby.

Anyway, just wanted to throw the good word on a solid thread.

Peace. Keep it sticky.

Were the pictures removed?
A question. What if you started autoflower strains at the same time and got both sexes male/female and did not want to store pollen. Would the pollen from the male be ready in time to pollinate the female? Or would you have to store pollen if they're the same age?

as long as they have the same time to harvest... they should be fine for breeding if thats what you're thinking.

:toke:

Thanks JM yes they will have the same time to harvest. I was just curious if either the male or female needed to be older. I was thinking of running a fan and let it do its thing. I want the whole plant to be pollinated.
Do you think its better that I stick a fan in there or should I do it manually?

I collect my pollen on wax paper over some days and use multiple sheets of wax paper so that I have more than one envelope of pollen then fold the sheets half way put them all into a Tupperware like box with dessicant on the bottom and screen to keep the w paper off of it for a couple days then fold it up real small and tape it up and put that into a mason jar then into the freezer with some dessicant packs in the jar. Its working good I guess just successfully pollinated my Chronic Ryders with some AK47 pollen thats a year old. I do sometimes add flour and use small medicine jars to keep the pollen no idea if there still good or not will find out..and I pollinate with a paint brush (4 int 2, 8 int 4) can find those at a hobby or arts n craft store thats the type of brush thin and tapered heres a couple piks.

Harvesting Pollen

I have read the whole thread. Except for Zygotes explanation. This thread is about storage.

Muddy told me to Harvest pollen so I have to learn. I dont want to breed exotic strains. I want to breed them to use them. I need seeds. lol. Automatics dont lend themselves to Clones which were so easy. So I thought I would isolate one healthy male with one healthy female and collect the seeds when they were done. But Muddy said to harvest the pollen and impregnate the chick (without actually fucking her).

But I see very little about Harvesting pollen.

Does anyone know how to Harvest pollen? Pictures greatly appreciated. (yeah, I know it aint easy)

Pollen falls after the male flowers open. I take a piece of 8.5 x 11" paper, cut a slit into the middle and slid it around the base of the stalk and let it rest on the top of the pot. The pollen will fall on the paper where it can then be collected. You can also wait till most of the male flowers are open and then shake it over a large piece of paper or a piece of glass. Use a single edge razor blade to scrape it into a pile, then put it in a small container with a few grains of rice. Store in the freezer.

BTW, all the bold type isn't really necessary. Makes it look like you're shouting.

Sorry about the Boldface but it is a form of a shout. It garners attention. People focus on the question. Ill go back to straight text.
