Some questions as these finish up:
  1. Bud washing? Probably a good idea right? No signs of mold/mildew but obviously a lot of dust and bugs. Should I stay away from hydrogen peroxide and just use lemon juice with baking soda?
  2. Drying? I have a drying rack but how much drying is really needed for outdoor grows? The plants look pretty dried out already and some of the stems are very hard/brittle feeling.
Found some spider mites trying to take over one of the lower buds, just removed the old leaves around the bud and nothing else. I check on the plants multiple times per day. Defoliating only the most wrinkled up leaves which pretty much just fall off.

The plants smell great, not sure how else to describe it. One of the AKs looks just about done whereas the others look like they have some time still. Frustrated that my 40x loupe is very difficult to spot amber trichomes whereas my 60x pocket microscope is nearly impossible to use with a very small FOV.

Update on grow [HASHTAG]#3[/HASHTAG] and grow [HASHTAG]#3[/HASHTAG].5

Could only get 2 out of 5 Haze XL and 2 out of 5 Kush XL to germinate! That's 4/10 and one of the Kush XL hasn't popped up to a seedling yet. Same germination method as the other seeds. Contacted the supplier and they agreed to send me 3x Candy Kush and 3x Sour Kush seeds as a one-time replacement.

I am running short on the season but I might be able to start 2 more grows. Risk massive humidity problems if I run into November. Problem is I have very little space to work with so I want to stick with my cycle. Have 5x White Widow photos to try as well, just need to time it out right. May as well save them for last and hope they get the biggest.

Chopped AK [HASHTAG]#1[/HASHTAG] at the very first sign of amber trichomes, could have let it go another week easily. This one AK always looked far more developed/mature than the other plants. Rest of grow [HASHTAG]#1[/HASHTAG] I think has a while to go as they all put out new pistils. Couple more weeks? Not sure.

Did a bud washing in buckets:
1st 5 gallon - room temp water with a cup of pure baking soda and a cup of pure lemon juice (no preservatives)
2nd 5 gallon - hot tap water
3rd 5 gallon - cold tap water

Then set them on a rack to drip dry for an hour, then moved them into a mesh drying rack at about 70F and 50% humidity. Took the fan leaves off at harvest but left nearly all the sugar leaves on. Not sure how much weight I'm looking at here but I would guess 2-4 oz only as the buds are very loose and leafy. The branches are huge but the buds are pretty small.

I am already thinking about reducing the number of plants I was planning to do because it is more work than anticipated. My strategy with grow [HASHTAG]#2[/HASHTAG] will be to feed them more and for longer. I cut the nutes on grow [HASHTAG]#1[/HASHTAG] a bit too early and some of the sugar leaves inside the colas have been drying out which is not good.

Have not sampled any of this AK yet but the smell is definitely sweet/spicy, thinking I might have to set up odor control for my drying rack as it is fairly stinky. Maybe the smell will die down once they have dried more.

Grow [HASHTAG]#1[/HASHTAG] 1x AK drying, 1x AK and 2x Critical Purple still flowering
Grow [HASHTAG]#2[/HASHTAG] 3x AK and 3x CP couple weeks into pre-flower, stretched them with N
Grow [HASHTAG]#3[/HASHTAG] 2x Haze XL and 1x Kush XL unfortunately the rest of the seeds didn't take
Grow [HASHTAG]#4[/HASHTAG] 3x Candy Kush and 3x Sour Kush going to start soaking the seeds tonight
Grow [HASHTAG]#5[/HASHTAG] 6x White Widow photos to end the season, starting in a month or so

Here goes grow [HASHTAG]#4[/HASHTAG] with 3x Candy Kush and 3x Sour Kush from Growers Choice Seeds, improved my germination setup a little bit. These are going to be the start of the last of the autos for the year I think.

CP [HASHTAG]#1[/HASHTAG] from grow [HASHTAG]#1[/HASHTAG] late yesterday I discovered had bud rot on a third of the large colas. I knew this thing could run into problems because the main cola was twice as fat as any of the other plants. I think the bud rot was due to lack of nutrients to keep the plant healthy, lack of airflow in the greenhouse, and just how the outdoor environment is.

I discovered it by noticing several of the sugar leaves looking like they were drying up in the middle of the buds. Normally the fan leaves dry up from the bottom up but this seemed a little more advanced. So I separated the buds to look inside of it and sure enough they were just starting to rot, mostly with just discolored buds but a couple spots where you could start to see the sort of webbed mold inside the buds.

I almost had a panic attack not for the sake of the bud, but for the sake of "oh fuck I have to harvest this NOW!!!" And not being sure what to do about this. Well it turns out this is pretty common in high humidity outdoor environments and people seem to just cut the bad parts out of their buds and hope it doesn't come back.

All in all I probably threw out a quarter of the buds, set aside a quarter of the buds as suspect, and chopped up and washed around half of the buds. It's a shame because these buds were really looking beautiful but I'm not going to try to salvage the moldy parts of the buds. The suspect buds I will probably cook down into oil rather than vaporizing them. I chose not to wash with H2O2 hydrogen peroxide, just my normal baking soda and lemon juice. Anything rotted or next to the rot was discarded.

Notice that dark sugar leaf, that's how I tracked it down

That screwy looking sugar leaf is the only evidence that I had

Another bud that was worse off

What to do... had a whole damn grocery bag of harvest!
20180618_190016.jpg

Here's what I threw away, you can easily tell the parts that are rotting
20180618_210313.jpg

What I saved, there's more suspect buds that I chopped out of the rotting colas but I set them aside and haven't washed them yet.
