When Europeans got to the US they had never seen vultures before. Because they circle up on wind currents like Buzzards do, they called vultures "buzzards" and the name stuck.

But Buzzards are birds of Prey.

Vultures eat dead stuff.
Five hundred years of error, thanks to the Europeans. Buzzards are way badass.
