Grow Mediums Grow in COCO?

A writeup on coco i tought i`d share with yall :peace:

first of all what is coco?

Coco coir is the outside layer of husk that surrounds the shell of the coconut. After coconuts are harvested, the fibrous husk is removed from the coconut seed. From this husk, three main horticultural coir products can be produced: coir chips, coir fiber or coir pith/dust. Coir dust retains water well while the fibers and chips help with air space and drainage.

There are many brands and types of coco coir available on the market. I recommend that you use only buffered coir products, as coco coir naturally contains a lot of sodium ions that cling to the coco coir like a magnet.

The buffering process involves pre-soaking with a buffering solution high in calcium, which displaces the sodium and balances the naturally occurring potassium. After the soaking period the media is washed with water, which removes the displaced sodium, leaving the calcium in the coir. This buffering process prevents unwanted draw down or ‘lockout’ of calcium and magnesium, and avoids sodium toxicity issues. These selections of coir products are made from high quality coconuts and use unique buffering processes to ensure the health of your crop.

need to list for growing in coco:

  • To have the time for it
  • To understand the wet/dry cycle
  • To possess a pH pen, properly calibrated and use it every watering. Strips are not good enough, buy a pen.

  • to be prepared to spend money on nutrients.
  • to be growing in pots, either under lights or outdoors.

The advantages of using coco - perlite mix with marijuana:

  1. Drainage. With this mix it is difficult to over-water once the plants roots are established. This is a big plus for new growers as over-watering is the most common mistake made by new growers, especially those who have planted in peat. Those growing in colder climates will benefit from the faster watering cycle as it facilitates more opportunities to adjust the Nutrient supply-
  2. The lightness of the growing medium allows the roots more access to Oxygen.
  3. regular root flushing - taking the medium back to neutral and removing salts produced by used nutrients. This mix allow a rapid and more efficient flush. Sick cannabis plants can be treated more quickly.
  4. Tight control over your plants diet.
The disadvantages of using coco - perlite mix with marijuana.

  1. More watering days.
  2. Strict pH control is essential.
  3. The plant is more reliant on you to supply its needs.
  4. More attention needs to be given when choosing or brewing Nutrients.
Nutrients for growing cannabis in coco - perlite medium.

i will not go into any brands but

your basic needs will be:

  1. A root stimulant.
  2. Vegetative nutrients.
  3. Flowering nutrients.
  4. Epsom salts or Cal/Mag
  5. Bud Boosters (optional)
  6. Molasses (optional)
Thank you!

Alright guys looks like I finally found my spot. (Growing in coco) Here's my story. I'm a brand newbie. Never grew anything in my life. Just got started. Germinated and planted but I was just reading something about using plain purified water with coco and it being bad. I did use Mephisto's super soil as directed (someone told me it was similar to kind soil). I also did not PH my water for the first initial soil watering I believe it was around 7.5 when I finally got a PH meter. A day later I do have a sprout. I lightly watered again with purified water and 2ml of cal mag plus (per gal) . I did PH the water this time to around 5.58.

Here is what I'm working with.
3 x 3 x 6 tent.
(1) Marshydro reflector series 144 - & timer - 1st grow so I wanted to keep it kinda small

Mephisto genetics - White Stomper, Heisenhound & Skysenberg

Soil mix - Pro HP Coco w/microrizae, Perlite, earthworm castings & Mephisto Super soil mix

5 gal air pots

Ventilation - 6" hyperfan with 6" black ops carbon filter. Filter not installed yet. Waiting for flower.

PH & PPM Tester - just picked these up.

temp & humidity gauge

I was originally going to go Regular seeds feminized but choose to go autoflower for the first grow. Most of my research was done on photo period plants... any help or suggestions to get my PH in order before this seedling starts to seriously go into Veg. Mode would be greatly appreciated.

I myself grow in straight coco and am also new to coco. Here's us what I use and always ph between 5.8-5.9 using ro water. GH Flora nova GROW for the first 2 weeks at a rate of 2ml per gallon. GH Flora nova bloom at a rate of 5ml per gallon until the flush. Additionally I use Cal/Mag at 5ml per gallon.
I have had trouble with ph in the beginning. I bought what I was told was ro water in a 6 gallon jug. Turns out that the water had a TDS or a ppm of 229!! I used this for 2 weeks! Then I found that I wasn't using enough CalMag per gallon and had some deficiencies. Then on top of all that I noticed 1 gnat flying in my tent. So trying to be proactive I put about 2" layer of sand on top of the coco. This choked the plant of Oxygen causing wilting. Also was watering everyday for the first 2 weeks. Ended up overwatering. Finally a member here set me straight! Let the plant breathe! So no I water when the plants need it. In my case this turns out to be every other day. Now I have finally got my "system" down.... lastly my plants that were supposed to be autos turned out to be regulars of photos. So hope this helps you in some way. Good Luck!!

I picked up loads of knowledge in the whole thread comments and all its a great community here I don't feel stupid asking newb questions as this is my first grow in Coco

I want to try one plant in coco brix. Can I use soil nutes, Plagron terra grow/bloom? I will add epsom salt and molasses and rhizotonic. Then big bud, overdrive. I guess it's the same as "coco nutes". NPK is NPK, right?

Yeah dude pretty much the same, make sure to compensate for low levels of cal/mag and ph.

Hello All.

Question:My plants are doing great. Today is Day 25.If I feed/water every day, should I give them the same amount of nutrients or more/less. I don’t want to burn them. It just seems excessive to feed the same amount or do this every day or other day?

Hello All.

Plants, like animals, including humans, need relatively constant/periodic input of nutrients and water. Most coco users presumably feed nutrients with every feeding/watering, generally the same amount (depending on what the plants look to need or not; stage, size, etc.), although some will say every other time or such is better. Presuming that the plants are not visibly showing signs of nutrient concentrations being too high or low, you shouldn't or simply don't have related problems.

Otherwise, why would feeding nutrients with every 'watering' every day or even every other day seem "excessive?" What leads you to even think this? Plants in nature, in soil, are exposed to rather constant nutrient levels. This includes no customizing, no ramping-up of feed concentrations as seedlings grow and plants mature, yet our plants do very well outdoors in soil, including growing well from birth to death in often rather fertile soil.

Most will say/agree that feeding with coco or other inert medium you should always feed something, such as at least low-dose base nutrients, with pure water potentially stressing the roots/plants. So if you feel compelled to not 'feed' every time, feed something vs. nothing.
