I have been growing for a few years now and the only thing I have not had success with is the smell.
I've grown indoors and outdoors, in soil and DWC, Auto flower and photo period.
I've cured in jars and I've air dried and dried in brown paper bags.
I've had harsh weed in the past and now my flushes and cures are good and my smoke is potent and smooth.
But I just can't get that skunky smell that everyone seems to look for when they see my weed.
The first thing that people do is stick their nose in the jar and sniff.
Instead of saying hey those are some nice looking well manicured buds the say it doesn't smell very strong.
I see at my local hydroponics store they sell a flush that enhances the final smell.
Is that the secret to it or am I not doing something right or is the smell just over rated?

It’s all strain related if your curing properly, I had crown royal that had a very tame smell and mephs that wreek to high heaven and you can’t keep a triple ziplock bag of it in the truck without feeling like your driving over skunks!

Some terpenes will evaporate at 70* and above. My most potent (smelling) strains were all run under hps with temps in the low 70s. LED and warmer room temps, I don't see those same smells any longer.
Saw this on RQS

I can confirm the soil as well. I'm in the north bay area California, I can pick out weed grown using the wine grape hulls in the compost. Heavy sweet earthy undertone added. Gone in regular bag soil or coco.
Mephistos Sour Livers was/is a friggin' stinker..
