Photoperiod First Photo Attempt: Green Crack and Bubba Kush

Week 2 Flower: RIP Bubba Kush
  • Week 2 of Flower: And Then There Was One

Well folks, today is day 22 since the flip. Like I said on my last post, I started counting flowering days on first signs of pistils which was two weeks ago. Yesterday, I did my first major trimming session and removed all the growth that hadn't made it's way to the net. It took about 2 hours, and I removed as few fan leaves as possible. Basically, only leaves that were proper nuisances were removed.

And if you've seen the above post, I have a bit of bad news: I spotted some male flowers on the Bubba Kush. I snipped as many off as I could find, then slept on it...

Today I decided to take the plants out of the tent and get a proper look. Unfortunately, I found a lot more balls. The Bubba had hermied. I decided to cut my loses, and I destroyed the plant. Now, only the Green Crack remains. I'm happy to report the Green Crack looks pretty healthy, and there is zero sign of any male traits.

I put a new trellis on it and tried to pry as much as I could to the outsides to try to fill up as much of the tent as possible. I think I'll give this another week or so to continue to fill up space in the tent before I just let her be.

    Flower - Week 3
  • Week 3 of Flower

Well folks, after the depressing incident of having to destroy the hermie Bubba Kush, I'm pleased to report the Green Crack is looking good.

This week, I also replaced my older HLG 135 3000k with the newer R-Spec model, so I now have two of the same lights in my tent. No more red and blue supplementing with this guy. I suspect blasting the BK with those red and blue pucks to try to mimic the R-Spec contributed to her eventual demise, at least young in her life -- I think that blue puck is why she stayed so short. Of course, me panicking and chopping off all those branches for no reason didn't help either :crying:

Anyway, this week, I tried stretching out the Green Crack as wide as possible to fill up the tent. I regret lolipopping as much as I did, as now I have some space around the perimiter of the blants, so I should have kept some bud sites lower down on the perimeter too, since I have a reflective tent. Oh well. Lots of lessons learned here for next time.

I also did a flush last week as my run-off EC kept creeping up significantly. I think I'm seeing the delayed repercussions of this now as I have quite a few burnt tips, but none of them look too bad.

Still feeding relatively lightly at around 1.2ec once per day. Lights have been brought down to around 800 PPFD; I was up around 900-950 but I was noticing some ill effects so I dimmed them a bit. Currently drawing around 230W from the wall.

Anyway, she's definitely starting to pack on some buds and things are getting frosty. Some pics:

    Flower - Week 4
  • Week 4 of Flower
    Happy New Year's, everybody! :bighug:

Not much to say about Week 4. I debated merging my Week 4 and 5 updates together, but I figured, what the hell. How about a little New Year's Day update for my AFN family :D

Things are progressing pretty steadily through mid-flower. I've learned so many "do nots" that I've done on this grow that I shan't be doing on future grows. This has very much been a trial run. I really think this grow would have benefitted from some schawzzing as it's just so leafy in general. More leaves than I've ever grown on a plant before. They're friggin relentless. I've been doing very conservative and selective leaf removal, but if I ever grow this strain again, I think this would be the one to test out proper schwazzing. Anyway, too late now, so it is what it is.

My bastardized training has also been showing it's repercussions - remember I initially tried to mainline this plant, but threw in the towel after the second round of topping. I then threw a trellis on during the stretch to try to widen it out a bit, but then did some growth removal toward the end of pre-flower. I think in doing so, I pretty well ruined the purpose of my mainline attempt. To me, mainline means deep, tall buds requiring light penetration. By removing the growth under the trellis, I have kept my buds a little too short. I'm hoping they fatten up substantially.

At the moment, I'm worried I'm not even going to yield as much as my last auto grow, which only took ~11 weeks. When this one is finished, I'll be at week 17-18!

Anyway, stats wise, lights at ~800 PPFD; temps around 24 deg C, humidity around 40-45%, fertigating twice a day at around 600ppm, runoff around 700ppm, pH at 5.8 or so.

    Flower - Week 5
  • Week 5 of Flower

    Hey folks,

I'll keep this short and sweet: things are getting stinky. Pretty well same conditions as last week. Starting in Week 6 I'll be shifting to ripening nutes so I suspect we'll see a bit more action around then.

    Flower - Week 6
  • Week 6 of Flower - A Few Seeds, I think

    Hey folks,

Today marks the end of Week 6 and I am approaching the finish line. I'm thinking around 2 weeks or so to go, maybe a few days less, maybe a few days more. I'm starting the final ripening stage of nutes tomorrow so I'm hoping these buds bulk up a fair bit over the next 7-10 days.

However, like my title says, I think I got a few seeds on my hands which is a huge bummer. I've noticed 3 "spots" of what looks like a little hard balls with no trichromes emerging from the very tippy top of 3 different buds. I got a picture of one down below, which I pulled out with a needle. I've never seen one before, but it looks like a developing/underdeveloped seed. It kind of broke apart when I pulled them out. I can only really describe them as hard, green "plant bits". Part of me wants to believe this is just a growing flower but I'm going to assume these are seeds, likely resulting from the hermied Green Crack? I haven't noticed any nanners so I'm assuming this plant hasn't self pollinated, but who knows.

I've been examining buds pretty diligently, and I haven't seen any seed-looking-things on the sides of any buds, or on any buds deeper down on the canopy. Literally just the very central tips of 3 of the upper-most buds, growing straight up and out.

Anyway, I'm sure it'll still be smokable. We'll see what Week 7 brings.....

    Flower - Week 7
  • Week 7 of Flower

    Hi again,

Just finished Week 7 of flower. As per the discussion above, I had some lead taco'ing. I bumped the humidity up in my tent a little bit as it was on the drier side. I've also noticed quite a few fungus gnat larvae in my run-off. I think they're growing in my saucers, which I can't really get at on account of the trellis. I think on my next grow, I'll get some mosquito bits or nematodes. Anyway, these things probably aren't helping the taco situation! I'm debating running through some diluted 29% H2O2 for at least one fertigation. I'm so close to the end here I'm not too concerned about losing some beneficial bacteria to take out some gnats. For my next run however, I think I'll look into mosquito dunks or nematodes...

Anyway, the taco'ing doesn't seem to be getting any worse and I plucked the most offending leaves (I know, I know, :p )

Anyway, here's some pics. She's real stanky....

    Flower - Week 8 & Harvest
  • Weeks 8-9 of Flower & Harvest Update

    Hi everybody,

I'm happy to report that my plant has been harvested :vibe:

If you've been following along, you'd recall I started with a Bubba Kush and a Green Crack. The Bubba grew balls in early flower, but the Green Crack persisted, although not without issues of her own. To name a few problems: ignorant usage of a RapidLED Blue Puck early on, a poor second transplant, a good two weeks of serious overfertilization, and a huge fungus gnat infestation late in flower. I'm attributing my taco leaves to those bloody gnat larvae :finger:

Nonetheless, I'm pleased to say the Green Crack was successfully harvested and is currently hanging to dry in my tent at 16-17C, 60% RH.

Excuse the coat hangars, pipe cleaners and bungee cord :crying:

All my previous drying has been done in ~5 days. I'm really trying to shoot for a 14 day dry period this time around, so I've added a small cool-mist humidifier to the tent to maintain ~60% RH or so. I have my extraction fan running at a low speed but an alarm mode set up to go to full tilt if my RH creeps above 70% or so.

Ill be back the weekend after next with a trim and yield report :toke:

    Cheers,

    tron

    Trim & Yield Report
  • Trim & Yield Report

    Hey folks,

Well, we've reached the end of the line on this grow. To recap, this was my first attempt with photoperiods after growing autoflowers for a couple of years. This was also my first attempt in coco. I started with a Green Crack and a Bubba Kush - both from Canuk Seeds - in a 2x4 tent under two 135W LEDs.

The Bubba hermied in early flower and was destroyed, leaving just the Green Crack to finish. I'm happy to report the Green Crack yielded 11oz bud + 3oz trim. My goal for both plants total was 12oz, so I'm pretty happy I still managed to get 11oz from just the one.

    A sincere thank-you to everyone who offered their help, support and kind words along the way: @Death The Cultivator @Suki813 @Cardinal @Mañ'O'Green @beavens @Big Sul @fauxnacho @Kyote @Mizzo81 @Modernviking @Olderfart @Stilg7

I like doing things twice, so next up is my second photoperiod run: Gorilla Glue #4 and White Widow from Canuk Seeds. Stay tuned. After that, I think I'll hop back to the autoflower train...

    :vibe:

    Thus concludes this grow journal!

    Thanks for reading!
