Ive been interested in trying to do an experiment in my 2x4 for a while. I wanted to try running one aqua valve with a bunch of sour cracks in small airpots with coco. I never got around to it but noticed on Instagram that some new trays designed to work with one aqua valve have been released. A 3 pot setup for a 2x4 and a 9 pot that fits in a 4x4. I believe they’re designed for use with the XL pots or 5 gal smart pots (fabric) I think those are wayyyy too big for my needs. Initially I wanted to try a dozen sour cracks in a SOG in the 2x4. My concern was how to limit the excess water sitting around and the feed water being exposed to light. In my head I came up with a possible solution but never did anything with it and figured I’d share it here in case someone with the time and interest to do so wanted to tackle this project. I figured I could make a wood frame with 2x4 that would fit inside the tent. Use Orca film or something like it to line the homemade “tray”. Then cut another sheet of Orca film to cover the entire 2x4 “tray” this is to keep light out of the feed water. Once you have this done you can just use an exacto knife and cut an “x” pattern wherever you want to place a pot and drop your pot in. I can’t see why it wouldn’t work. The one issue with using an airpot is that when assembled as intended the base of the pot is already almost an inch off the ground. That isn’t ideal for wicking up the water from the bottom... I just started a grow and I’ll be putting up a journal in the Mephisto section. I’ll probably mirror it in this section too as I’m going to try something a little different. I only have one autopot grow under my belt and in-laws be the simplicity but felt like the standard 3.9 gal pots are just too big and I felt like
My coco just stayed too wet because of it. This time I’m going to use the standard trays and aqua valves with my “modified” airpots... I’ll attach a pic of what I’ve done...
Now the bottom of the pot is flush with floor and should suck up water easily now... My question to you fine people is this... These pots are much smaller than the standard pots, there will be space around the pot where water can be exposed. Should I be worried about this and use some film to cover the exposed areas the pots won’t cover, or is it no big deal??? Sorry just being lazy... It’s kinda my thing! Lol. Lazy... if I wasn’t I would’ve already pulled off the test grow I described in this post this past summer! Anyways, I’ll be transplanting from cups into these airpots in the next few days so I’ll start a journal on this grow shortly... Hope this inspires some deeper thoughts on the subject!
