Dinafem Bubba Kush & Blue Cheese 1'st Dina Grow

Thanks fuggzy, that's really great info and I've written some points in my notebook. When we calculate sq ft, do we not include the height? I'm just thinking of shopping for a new fan and whether the height should be included in my calculations.

I did have the lights 24" from the plant, but they're currently 32", trying to encourage stretch, but I'm not sure it's working.

Yes, I'll pick your brains in a few weeks when I start to plan the cupboard conversion. It's 100 x 120cm with a 7ft height and has access to the chimney, which is ideal, really, but I'll just have to work with what I've got for the time being

I really appreciate you taking the time to explain the wattage v space, thanks
So I forgot to give you one of these... :slap: Welcome to AFN, the most enchanted canna site on the net. We like to treat eveyone like equals here, and no grow gets left behind! As a seasoned member, it is my/out duty to make sure your first grow goes as smooth as possible. If you ever need a hand feel free to contact me via my threads in my signature, a PM, or a tag ( @Fuggzy ).

  • Okay regarding the square footage, you only include the width, and the depth so the equation is w*d=sq ft.
  • To figure out the cubic footage you would use the height for w*d*h=cu ft.
  • To figure out the wattage spread of your lights you would use square footage, and the typical recommended watt/foot is 50w/f, so you are in a good spot. (you don't have to be exactly at 50w, especially with led, but it is still what I shoot for. I actually plan on adding another ~200w for 1080 total, and 67.5w/ft. More light still equals more energy, and thats just more plant!)
  • To figure out proper ventilation you would use cubic footage, and the total volume of air is what you are dealing with. The recommended CFM of air flow is 3 time the cu/ft of your grow area. So a 100cu/ft area would need a fan rated at 300CFM.
You cupboard would be about 17.3 square feet which is a pretty good are, and a bit more than I have in my main tent. So just for rough estimate of light wattage needed... 866.25 watts is 50/ft @ 17.325 sq/ft. Like I said, it does not have to be exact, thats just what the calculator is saying.

For ventilation you are looking at 121.275 cubic feet, and would need a fan around 363CFM. Thats pretty easy to get, and I would, for the most part, suggest an overpowered fan with a speed controller. The reason for this is when you add the/a carbon filter it will put a restrain on the air flow, and you want to be sure you fan and filters CFM rating are around the same. Also, if it gets really hot, you can always kick up the airflow to cycle the hot air out faster. I would suggest getting a fan/filter combo of the same brand as they should already be "made" for each other. Unless you plan on getting a Presh filter or something, but IMO, you don't need one that expensive to make it work.

Access to the chimney is golden. That alone will save you on temps like you wouldn't believe. I know you are running LED, and they are "cool", but 850 watts of thermal dissipation is still 850 watts of heat no matter if it is a LED, HPS, or your computer. They may not sound like much, but the degrees start adding up FAST. Heat is a byproduct of energy (watts) not being used efficiently, and is why the LED is cooler than the HPS. I run my vents in to my attic, and it saved me 10+ degrees (f) easily.

My hps is air cooled, and I run a filter on it to so that all air leaving my room is sent free.

@Bailey I don't know if I told you, but I grew up in Orland, and still go there often. It was horrible new to wake up to. Theres not a lot I can do to help as far as money to donate or a room to share, but my wife and I have been trying to spread any offers we hear of. Some of the airline where giving out free tickets to family members. There is a local real-estate guy that opened up ALL of his rental properties. He also got together with a bunch of hotels in the area, and I would say about 6 of them opened all their doors to those in need. The avatar is something that was trending, and I really liked it, so I figured it was a subtle way to show support here. Thanks for the rep slap too bud!

It great to see people coming together to help others it makes me feel like humanity isn't lost just yet there's so many bad things happening around the world just now

@Fuggzy Thanks so much for providing that information, it's appreciated and helps to make sense of the equipment I need for my cupboard. Your set up looks neat. You say that I need a fan @ 363CFM. I've been looking at a Red Scorpion, which is a 5" @ 400m3/hr. Would this be enough?

Do you use a dehumidifier? I need to look out for one, but I'm unsure of the size for my tent.

It's nice to meet someone who is so willing to help a newbie. I think this first grow is probably the most stressful, as there's no reference point for me to judge the progress of my plants. Thanks Fuggzy

Never a problem Cat, we all had to start somewhere. So if we do bust out our hand calculator, AKA some converting website. We can see that 1.0 CFM converts to be 1.7 m3/h. So you would need to find something more around 616m3/h. A word of the wise. DO NOT rely on a booster type fan to run your tent. They do not have the power to keep up with a filter, and are only designed to help air that is already moving, not to actually move stale air. Propeller style fan do not have the needed pressure (unless it's a really expensive specialty fan). You need to use a centrifugal fan or a squirrel cage blower.

Bad design... Some people claim success, but it's a crap shoot at best. Don't skimp on the ventilation system, it's about 30% of whats needed to make thing work right. You don't need to go crazy either (although I do, ask about the micro cabs air flow some day), just be realistic.

Good design...
(centrifugal fan) Best choice.

Example of a propeller fan that would work, but is over priced for our needs. I would only use this if sound was an issue as it claims to be rather stealth. But at $144 for 6", it better be damn quiet. For the record, if I wanted a stealth fan, this is most likely what I would choose.

So I do not use a dehumidifier, but I have a LOT of air flow going on, and we run the AC at all times so I stay in a pretty consistent range of Rh. I have 2 fans circulating air in my tent and my exhaust fan is a bit overpowered for my cubic feet, and it runs at full power 24/7.

So what kind of medium are you growing in?

@tripaholic88 Sorry bud I know I often hijack your threads for this, but I'm just trying to keep the good word circulating! :pighug:

That shit does not fit well at all, silly Chinese marketing. @Cat although still the correct fan style, that filter is about 2" to big. It should fit around the small lip on the fan, and not go past it. If you where to screw those together, you'd be drilling right in to the fan wall. Always match up the sizes correctly, or use the appropriate adapters.
