Now THAT's an introduction :D I already know you're gonna rock it ... but good luck anyway!! ^_^

Arty Grows: Rainbow Stone & Citrus Noir

2 strain from The Autoflower Portal
It has been a while since my last grow as I only grow for myself and my family and my missus.
I'm a vaper and only then in the evening after the day's work and chores are done and any time I chooses on weekends and holidays.

This means a crop can last me a good while and I am able to take a break inbetween grows and in the hot months of the summer.
I have always been an ardent supporter of Auto's and LED's, growing my first auto when "The Joint doctor" released "Lowryder Auto" to the world. My actual flip to LED was a few years later as LED light took a little longer to get to the stage where they were growing good buds and because they were not cheap.
At the time i was a member of another forum but I have been visiting AFN since there were only 20 members.

I used to love coming to AFN for information on auto's and noticed that these forward think growers were up for trying not only these new type of genetic strain which would flower regardless of the light cycle. Not only that a fair few of these pioneering growers were also using LED lights, especially from a company called "Grow northern" Who were making MS004 and MS0006 at the time.
I was a lurker for a number of years and would go back to my other forum and spread the good news about auto's and LED grow lights.
In the end the draw was too great , with so many new auto's and LED lights getting better and better and so like a moth to light I transitioned to AFN
permanently.
It has was one of the best
decisions I've made, no longer having to battle LED and Auto trolls who constantly denigrated them in favour of HID and photoperiods.
I love the kind friendly nature of AFN and the awesome staff and members here, who are always willing to lend a hand to those who need it and often resulting in firm friendships.

I wanted to share this as there are always new people, who don't know me and how I became a member here and also because there are people who do know me but don't have the backstory i have just shared.

The two strains I will be growing are from "The autoflower Portal" and have been bred by the breeder called "Stone" a wonderful, generous & kindhearted man.

Strain 1. Rainbow Stone

In the process of developing Black Stone and creating sixth generation feminised seeds, a sweet candy raspberry/bubblegum Moonstone F3 was reversed and matched with chosen lime/liquorice/musky Black Stone F5 and Rainbow Stone was born. Rainbow Stone brings out the best of both parents – stunning colours, connoisseurs flavours and broad range of medical benefits.
Small compact plants, with black edged leaves.

Strain 2 - Citrus Noir

Citrus Noir is a sativa dominant autoflowering hybrid, created by crossing a fruity Sour Lemon F4 with a musky, berry and grapey Black Topaz. Citrus Noir carries the desirable rich trichome production from the parents. Pheno variation, the most expressed is the typical hybrid with well developed satellite branches, the other one is more compact with dominant main cola. There is a black leaf phenotype as well.

Lights for the veg period.

For veg I will be using a DIY build 4 x CBX3590 COB grow light form "Grow Northern" now trading as "Horticulture Lighting Group" the makers of the "Quantum Board LED"
I will be using this light in the veg period because of the high amount of blue compared to my SanLight S4W's which have a better flower spectrum hand down.
The Cree CBX3590 COB chips used are 3500 Kelvin and when looking at the graph below, you will have to imagine the line between the 3000 Kelvin and the 4000 Kelvin.
These lights are passively cooled (ie have no fans) and are ideal for stealth growing.
The 4 x CBX3590 set up I built has a 300W max output and is dimmable.

Lights for the flowering period

For the flowering period i will be using "SanLight S4W's" of which I have three units.
2 x S4W's are sufficient for my grow space (60 cm x 100 cm) although I can alway add the third if I need a light boost towards the end of flowering.
The S4W's use premium Osram diodes (LED's) and are passively cooled (ie have no fans) which is great for stealth growing.
I will be using the SanLight S4W's for the flowering period due to their superior flowering spectrum and shown in the graph below.
Each S4W is 140w with 3 light totaling 420W if all 3 are used at the same time.

I am a stealth grower and run a silent cab, so passively cooled lights are must for a silent cab.
Another factor for having a silent cab is silencing the intake and extraction fans.3
To do this I first bought some of the quietest fans on the market "The soler and palau td silent" fans.
I bought over sized fans For several reasons as follows

  • The larger size had a lower Db
  • Larger fans can be run at a slower speed with the correct fan speed controller which don't cause hum.
  • TD silent have two speeds on board low and high. i use low for intake and high for out take so as to have some negative pressure.
  • The fans a cross flow, rather than centrifugal which have ab it more suck to them. So the larger fan are able to move more air without straining the motor, which cam make fans noisier.
I then built two fan silencer boxes for the already really quiet fans out of plastic "Really useful boxes"
The fans were wrapped in two different silencing materials I had to hand. the first was a huge roll of bubble wrap.I wrapped the bubble wrap around the fan and then sealed it in the box.
The second material was from a spare Duvet(comforter) I had, so I stripped out the hollow fibre filling and again wrapped around the fan and sealed it in the box.
At this stage it was experiment but low and behold, both silencing materials did a great job!

Next was silencing the ducting. for this i used an insulated ducting called "Phonic Trap" and used hollow fibre like i had used for one of the silenced fan enclosures.
"Phonic Trap" is a great product for two reasons 1. it does a great job of muffling sound 2. it isn't full of glass fibre (which I detest).
I used 6" Phonic Trap ducting for the 6" diameter fans and then put a second layer over that using 8" ducting. Doubling up the ducting worked a treat.

However there is always gonna be the whoooshing noise that comes out the the end of the ducting!
So I bought a 6" flexible silencer for the end of the ducting and around the ducting i put some 8" Phonic trap and then put some 10" Phonic trap around that.
Now the silence was silenced!

Finally for the cab i put up some mylar coated bubble wrap on every surface of my wooden cab to stop condensation on the walls to reduce heat signature.

So that's the silenced cab.

Grow Medium

Coco - either Canna pro or Cococoinz (small compressed coco pucks 10 = 1 liter)
Mixed 4 to 1 with either Perlite or Growstones GS-2 (
expanded glass gravel) which has an even higher air holding capacity than perlite.

I hand water and use DTW - Drain To waste. generally allowing for 20%-30% run off.
Run off is removed with a wet/dry shop vacuum.

Nutrient will be described as I go along, at the moment I'm being a bit cheap as i have bits and
pieces of different nutes which need to be used up.
Although I was eyeing up the "Dutch Pro Coco HW Auto" range and it was a good price too!

Now for some pic of the "Rainbow Stone" Seedlings of which all three have shown their heads.

These pics are in my Micro Cab - DIY PC Full ATX Server Tower PC Case
I was going to do 2 Rainbow Stones and 2 Citrus Noir but I have 3 Rainbow Stones and only one of the two Citrus Noir has germed, so that is what I will grow.

The seeds were soaked for 24 hours in a shot glass, on a temperature controlled propagator at 24C.

Then placed between moist folded tissue in a plastic film wrapped tub, again on the temp controlled heated propagator at 24C.
Once the tap root was between 5mm and 10 mm they were placed into Rootit horticultural sponges and put into mini propagator domes and back on the heated propagator.
Once the cotyledon leaves showed and they started to reach for thelight they went into my micro cab , which has 1 x CBX3590 DIY built LED light. max power from this driver is 50W and it is dimmable.
The micro cab is the ideal location for bringing on seedlings before they go in to the main cab!

Money goes in:biggrin: money goes out:nono:
Well aint that just life eh?
It however isn't all bad, in fact it is mostly all good!:headbang:
I have just had an Ebay splurge:woohoo1:stocking up the supplies cab!
In my first post I didn't cover Nutrients because i wasn't sure what I was going to use.
I have plenty of bits and pieces of this nute and that nute from different lines. which I could have grown with but I guess now i am saving them for a time if I run out of anything.
I decided, partly from other growers journals to grab me some "Dutch Prow, Coco, Hard Water, Autoflowering nutes".
I ordered the full kit, which comes in a box that looks like a Dutch narrow house, which made me smile when i saw it!
  • Dutch Pro Grow and Bloom 2-part base nutrients
  • Includes a bottle of the awesome Dutch Pro Explode for stunning blooms!
  • Dutch Pro Take Root ensures a huge and healthy root system
  • Multi Total provides enzymes and lots of other great ingredients to complete the line-up
  • Includes a full easy-to-use Dutch Pro feeding chart so you don't have to remember when to use what!
  • For use in hard water areas
  • For Autoflowers
dutch-pro-starters-kit-soil.jpg
That box, it's got to make you smile!

The next choice was to get some silicon for good strong leaves and stem, my choice here was "Vitalink Silicon Max".
s-l640.jpg

My next choice was "Vitalink Fulvic"
s-l640.jpg

This product can be used as a foliar spray or as a root drench by adding it to the nutrient tank.
Benefits:
  • Boosts plant results at each life cycle stage
  • Improves the way plants transport nutrients
  • Starts to work as soon as it is applied
  • Foliar & root drench

When using high light levels under the full spectrum of LEDs and growing in coco, Calmag is something every grower should have on hand.
High light levels combined with coco's love of binding calcium make Calmag a must, but al calmags are not equal!
The inclusion of iron in the mix is the missing links, so these days any calmag for must have iron in it.

My choice of Calmag is "Ionics Clamag Pro" which also has a few other nice bits and pieces in it.
Ionic Cal-Mag Pro contains three key ingredient groups to return plants to healthy growth:

Mineral elements

Ca and Mg to restore peak growth.

Three calcium sources including chelated calcium for rapid assimilation by the plant giving quick results.

Fe (chelated) to correct a potential deficiency or uptake limitations.

Organic Compounds

Specific amino acids, in bioactive L-form for speedy absorption, to enhance photosynthesis and nutrient uptake.

e.g. Glycine and glutamic acid are fundamental metabolites in the formation of vegetable tissue and chlorophyll synthesis.

Seaweed Extracts

For increased resistance to pests and diseases.

To alleviate abiotic stress.

Enriched with natural growth enhancers.

Now we are getting to the substrates.

Firstly is my choice of coco.
For the past two grows I have been using "Coco Guru's - Coco coinz" with great results!
In the past I used "Canna Pro coco" which I liked and never had a problem with but when big bags wrapped in black plastic were delivered , I used to get some wry grins!
With Coco coins they come as compressed pucks, 10 puck when soaked in water make 1 Liter. this is a very convenient way to measure how much you need before rehydrating!
Also when delivered it is a relatively small box and I get no knowing looks!

Description
Developed to include the benefits of compressed coco, made into manageable small COINZ that can be dropped into individual pots with ease. Just pour the required amount of COINZ into your desired pots, giving you a total of 50 litres of coco in a small handy box, with handle, weighing approximately 3.2kg.

s-l400.jpg

Size / Contents
• 50 litres

In Brief
• Pre-washed – low sodium
• Pre-buffered – high in calcium
• Non-fertilised – low EC

How to use
1. Open packaging
2. Tip Coinz into a minimum 50ltr container
3. Pour water onto Coinz for expansion
4. Once fully expanded, sprinkle into plant pot
Note: For faster expansion use lukewarm water

In recent grow I have added "Growstones" to my coco. Growstone are made from recycle glass. The glass is expanded, much like clay pebbles are to give them many tiny holes. These tiny holes hold air and water/nutrients and they have a much higher air holding capacity than perlite.
Unfortunately there are no stocks in the UK presently, I'd have to buy from Canada with a hefty shipping cost!
So I have ordered so "Perlight".

In addition to the above I have also purchased some "Dutch Pro - PH- Down for Flowering". I still have plenty of "Dutch Pro - PH- Down for Vegetative & Dutch Pro PH+ UP for both Vegetative and Flowering.

I have also ordered some more measuring syringes as the older ones are losing their measurement lines and numbers.

Other bits and pieces include

"Maxicrop - Take Root" - Root growth stimulant.

"Rootacillin" - biological root inoculant. Prevents and treats root disease & protects against Pythium, phytophthora & Fusarium. By coating the root with million of beneficial bacteria.

"Nitrozyme" - Promote strong and healthy growth, I will use it as a foliar spray - Seaweed based.

"Plant Magic" - Bio-wetter - For breaking the surface tension of nutrient solutions, which allows for better wetting and soaking in of nutrients in the substrate ie. coco.

Finally we get to the "Hesi Super Vit" - SuperVit by Hesi is a growth and flowering stimulant that gives your plants a series of important amino acids and vitamins to keep them healthy and growing fast.

Nice design on the tee bro, that looks Ice. Moonstone is about 8 days in and looking nice cant wait to see how she smokes, if I get a fem that Is lol. If not pollen will be chucked lmfao

Parcels have been arriving thick and fast :D

I'm still waiting for the "Coco Coinz":nono: to arrive, as I need to pot up my Citrus Noir seedling, which has roots sprouting out bottom of of the Rootit horticultural sponge.

The Dutch Pro Coco Autoflower kit has arrived, I got the Coffee Shop looking box, I was sure I was going to get the Brothel looking box:haha:

I have already been using "Dutch Pro PH- Grow PH- Bloom & PH+ (for grow & bloom)" in my previous grows and supplies of the "PH- bloom" were getting low & I have just received another bottle, to keep me going.

I have also this minute ordered a bottle of Dutch Pro "Leaf Green" which is a foliar spray, ready to use straight out of the bottle, no diluting or anything.

Here is the chart for Dutch Pro - Coco - Autoflowering having it here, will make finding it easy for me :eyebrows:

:growing::ph:
Dutchpro-HydroCoco-Autoflower.jpg
:ph::growing:

Tomorrow's job is to clean down the main cab with bleach spray, scrub the grow tray and hang the 300W COB (4 x Cree CBX3590's ~3500K) Which is dimmable.

Once I have potted up the Citrus Noir, there will no longer be space in the Micro Cab, in Which I can only fit 3 x 1 Ltr long root pots.

It will be nice to have the main cab fired up again as it is silent, whereas the Mini Cab's (Server Tower PC case) small fans, although not over loud, still produce a noise not conducive to sleeping (both cabs are in my bedroom)!

Not much else to report today, next post will probably be on friday.:headbang:

Until then my friends:pass: ta-ra & toodle pip,

ive never seen a line of autoflower nutes it does show how far they have come in the last few years

ive never seen a line of autoflower nutes it does show how far they have come in the last few years
There was another line of autoflower nutes released quite a few years ago but I forget the name!

I just had a search for Autoflower Specific Nutrients and the only other brand I found was Bionova

Bionova - AutoFlower-SuperMix - https://www.bionovanutrients.com/grow-products/autoflower-supermix

There may be other autoflower nutrients out there but I spent enough time to know, it probably would take a long time to find it.

There is a thread on Autoflower nutes (not a very long one)here on AFN, where I mentioned Dutch Pro Autoflower nutes 5 years ago - https://www.autoflower.org/threads/autoflower-specific-nutrients.37386/

So it has taken me 5 years to get around to getting some "Dutch Pro autoflowering nutes" lolz!:haha:
I would have done it before but I had a load of nutes supplied to me, which has lasted me a long time,I have a small cab and only grow for percy plus a few select members of the fam!
I'm a evening vaper, so a little goes a long way!

I did posset the notion of autoflower nutes many years ago and wondered, "which company would be the first to release them" - that was back in 2012 and is highlighted in magenta in the article below written by @DutchPassionTony and first posted here on AFN.
The original article was posted by @DutchPassionTony and was lost from AFN archives, during updates to the sites server, even though the article is now 7 years old, it is still and interesting read and also a good look back at how things have progressed!

It was after Dutch Tony of Dutch Passion posted a piece here in AFN about the effects growing under LED had on cannabisses uptake of nutrients and how the fuller/full spectrum made it possible to take up more nutrients.

I have just made a copy of the copy I posted here, which I posted on ICMag in 2012 and prior to that on Strain Hunters (under a previous moniker on both forums) Previously posted on AFN here in 2011/2012 - https://www.autoflower.org/threads/...ium-added-to-our-led-grows.39178/#post-747800

Here is part of a post I made back in 2012 on ICMAG , In the most part it was copied and pasted from a post made by Dutchpassiontony here on "AFN", many moons ago.

After searching around for over 30 mins in the AFN archives for the original post by tony, I had to give up and go and copy and paste it from ICMAG lmao two-ing and fro-ing info lol.

Any way here is the post - I think the post was called " Dutch Passion Tony's thoughts on Calcium uptake and LED's" or something similar.

One other important aspect of LED is the fact that the light comes evenly from a panel of 3 feet x 3 feet. Or 1m x 1m for us Europeans. The effect of that is a more even spread of light rather than a single point source as you have with a traditional HPS Bulb. LED is similar in concept to the ‘travelling light’, or HPS on a rail where the light rolls from one side of the room to the other ensuring that all plants get some direct light at some point. The problem with the travelling light technique is that for a lot of the time the bud is getting low light. The idea of spreading that illumination out,a s the LED panel does, results in all the plants is getting a fair share of light all the time And all the light the plant does get is rich in the most useful wavelengths. It is a dream scenario for the plant and perhaps that alters the plants feed requirements. It seems to increase the requirement for calcium and magnesium and I am sure that is key to understanding what it is that LED does differently.

Here is an initial theory on why magnesium deficiencies are seen. Magnesium is used in several ways, it is also needed as part of the chlorophyll molecule itself. Could it be that LED grown plants use extra Magnesium to produce extra chlorophyll to deal with the increased levels of useful light? I don’t know, but it is a fair question to ask.

Calcium is used in different ways by the plants but one way is in cell walls and membranes. It is used in enzymes and transporting of other nutrients. Somehow more of this is going on.

So my thoughts are along several different lines right now.

LED is now more effective ‘watt for watt’ than HPS. The poor public image of LED is down to some early exaggerated claims that never survived public scrutiny. But LED technology has really moved on in the last year or so.

I think the LED market will really takeoff when there is a bit more serious competition. HydrogrowLED look like they could give HPS a serious run for it’s money in coming years but prices will have to drop. I can’t believe that the LED manufacture can be so expensive, a few cents each but surely not too much when LED’s are being produced by the million in the Far East. And assembly of the components is something the Chinese can do with their eyes shut for a fraction of the price we can achieve in the west. So $1,000 or more for a 300 watt LED device seems excessive. Get the price down to $300-$400 and hardened HPS devotees will buy them. In my opinion LED prices are going to have to soften in order to get mass market appeal. At current prices I think 90% of customers will never be able to justify it even though they might love to have one.

But technically they are really moving LEDalong. It makes me wonder where LED light performance might be in a few years time. For those that worry about heat signatures and energy consumption then LED has obvious attractions. The light is all fully usable by the plant and it is delivered from an evenly lit panel rather than a single point. So all the plant surface area can join in the photosynthetic fun.

I have one other point to make about LED. By my reckoning some 40% of available surface area on the panel is not used. I am sure there is a reason for this such as limits in soldering density, or something even sillier reason such as the current factory only make circular units. But I am sure that these problems could be overcome. LED panels could be made brighter by filling some of the ‘dead space’ on the panel with more LED’s. And like I said, I really can’t believe the LED’s themselves can cost that much. We have seen LED’s move from 1 watt to 3 watts in the last couple of years. What happens when they find a way to mass produce a 5W or even a 7W version? And prices will drop like they do for everything else that is mass-producible. I remember being mesmerised by the first electronic calculator I saw, ‘could I ever afford one of my own?’ I wondered. And barely a decade later you were getting them for free when you filled up your car with gas.

I think we need to ask the nutrient manufacturers how they need to reformulate their products to allow for the new feeding requirements of the plants and I will check around the Dutch Passion office to see if we have any contacts and let you know. I am sure I can initiate some cooperation from my mineralised brothers in the nutrient world. I will see if I can get them to register onsite and give us their views.

I think LED will really take off. Right now it is still in the stage of the ‘early adopter’ . It will become a mainstream technology but manufacturers will first face up to a transition from ‘premium market’ to ‘mass market’ and change profit expectations for it to happen.

And Seymour, we would truly love to see you scrog a couple of AutoMazars, let me know if you are serious about that, perhaps after this grow. If you are serious,we will get you some seeds and run a ‘guess the yield’ contest. But I would go for both LED panels (or evenbetter 2x penetrator pro’s !) rather than one. Make it spectacular !

The plant continues to look excellent Seymour, how much is she drinking each day ? I wondered whether there was a hint of nutrient burn at the tips of the leaves on one shot? As you say, she might need another week before the PK14 boost. I am amazed she is at an EC of 1.6 when the Mazar would only take an EC of 1.0 under the same conditions.

You are doing great mate

This post was originally posted by "Dutchpassiontony" on the Autoflower network

Interesting stuff , what does the future hold? Will we see LED targeted plant foods & who will be the first to formulate them.

The Seymore referred to, in the start of this post is a guy called "Seymore-buds" he grew 350g with 290W of led, thats over a gram per Watt. Comparable to what you can expect with an hps! He was growing "Auto Mzaar" from Dutch Passion.

Auto's are now starting to achieve more acceptable weights and highs and LED getting better all the time, producing some fine crops. All we need now is for LED to drop in price,I'm guessing in the next few year we will see that happen.

2012

As for the name of the first Auto specific nutes, that is but a blur in my poor addled mind but no worries as they no longer make it!:baked:

So for the moment, if you want Auto specific nutes Dutch Pro are the market leaders, with 5 years of skin in the game!
