first off id like to apologize to phammy for annexing his grow journal, but i feel that this mis-information must be rectified.

kkkrrrrrkkkmmm (throat clear)

First off lumen or luminous flux is a measurement of visible light that HUMANS can see its not based on light that you cannot see, because if you cannot see it what good is it people? therefore if i was trying to light up my kitchen i would agree with you more lumens is infact better.. but were not exactly trying to do that are we? :o and if we were talking about 100 lumens of 6500k cfls or 1000 lumens of 6500k cfls yes that would also be better because were talking about the same type of light for one plant, but this is not the case, were dealing with what the plant can see or utilize, which is measured in photosynthetically active radiation (PAR).

-by your logic, 150 lumens of cfls would be much better than 100 lumens of led for growing plants, but we know this is not the case at all..

with the introduction of leds people can create lights that putout the precise nanometer(nm) of light that the plant can actually use, at an efficieny rating of 80% and up. when using HID lamps most of the energy is converted into heat or radiation in the infrared range which is useless because the plant does not posses the ability to convert heat into food.

also we do not live in a geocentric world, the earth revolves around the sun.. and the reason photos start producing bud is because of the amount of darkness the plant is receiving not because of the "red light" produced by the sun, which is not really even produced at all, its the same light thats being produced all the time, its just now the photons coming to earth now have to pass through more atmosphere to get to you which slowws the particle down, and if youll remember from physics class the wave particle duality of nature, a photon is not only a particle but it also acts like a wave, and when its frequency is slowed down it moves closer to the infrared range on the light spectrum.

also @ namvet watch this video it will explain quite a bit about light for plants http://youtu.be/DAw13w9eFxY

i mean think about it UV-b is also used by plants, but we cant see it! and on a lumen meter it wouldnt show up! but that doesnt mean its not there. also if you ever wondered why x ray machines damage film of various ISOs thats because the x ray particles technically are light or radiation its just you cant see it. i was partially stoned when i started replying to this message than started playing some cod so i may have gotten off topic, but i hope this clears this up for you

My 6500k have 1170 Lumens and my 2700k Have 1600 lumens. Total of 64,480 Lumes from 984 watts. Dont really know how important lumens are here since the only plants under these cfls are fresh transplanted females up to day 35 then they go into the HPS Tent. Did this just because i feel having both spectrum makes such a big difference when they are growing. Starting out in HPS from seedling is just awful IMO. never tried MH but have tried all 6500k CFLS and they seem to always stretch and become non branching. look at the differences.
