hey guys, about to buy my lights for my first grow, ill be growing stuff like mobydick auto and amnesia haze auto, but I cant choose between a 400w HPS or a Mars hydro 400 (190w), what should be better for me? I know the LEDs expend less energy but i dont really care about that, i want better result for my plants. Thanks

It's not just less energy bro, LED's also give off a lot less heat, but require greater calmag dosage.

It boils down to personal preference

400w hps.

You'll need a mars 900 to match the light output of a 400w hps.

Mars leds actually give off more heat than hps because they're leds are less efficient. (Hps is 40-42% efficient, epistar leds are 30%) HPS just also emits IR which will heat the canopy under the light(up to 10℉ over room temp)

Temperature is measured in watts now

Energy is measured in joules. 1 joule/s is equal to 1 watt. Energy has to go somewhere, so for a 30% efficient led diode, 30% of the energy input is released as photons, the remaining 70% is released as heat. 1 watt is equal to 3.4 BTU/hour of heat.

Now as I mentioned in my first post, HPS does emit infrared which will raise canopy temps.

Which makes the overall temperature hotter with the HPS....right?

That I'm not sure. Far too high to find out how to convert infrared to heat. The IR is usually nice, I'm needing to add heat with leds. But without proper airflow, or too high ambient temp, hps heat can be difficult to manage.

:pass:

Mainly wanted to point out the efficiency differences. Even with reflection loss of hps, mars leds are more like a watt for watt equivelance. (190w led will not out perform 400w hps) if you read their site they even recommend a mars 1200(550w) as a 600w hps replacement.

1. HPS bulbs spectrum is not suitable for growing, worst light you can buy +lot of heat +expensive to run.

2. Not all LED lights are created equal - you need to check its spectrum and how many umol is giving you. Most of these cheap Chines LED lights only have blue and red spectrums.

Get premium CMH bulb with decent reflector, its better than HPS.
