New Grower 2nd auto grow.

OK

Put the tank heater in the res tank. Hung up the led and have run it on test for a day.

The only issue I have is this: I'm spending ages up at the tent! The reason being, I have a little vape,go up to check on things, unzip the tent and then spend an hour opening and closing the zip to make pretty light patterns on the floor! See pics!

I'll get my excuses in early!

This grow wasn't scheduled to start until the new year, I asked for grow stuff for Xmas.

I started it early as a distraction from a close family member falling Ill and passing away last week.

That's the reason I'm using for not noticing that the display on ph meter had partially failed meaning what I thought was 6.1 was 8.1!

Got a new meter now.

I also underestimated the power of the led and fried a seedling!

The air intake for the grow now comes from the airing cupboard and keeps the garden at a steady 21c (no I didn't paint the cupboard pink, it was that colour when we moved).

A couple of make shift sun parasols for the wee ones.

This one's is the oldest, a little stunted for 3 weeks, probably due to my ph fu (k up!

Slightly radiated by the led. And below, very radiated by the led! See if she survives.

As I have an empty pot due to poor germination rates with the super skunk, I've treated myself to these.

Later.

Heads up from mother nature.

The weather dropped by about six degrees yesterday, when I checked the grow it was at 17c!

I've grossly underestimated my heat loses. As a quick fix I put the extract fan on the timer with the pump, this gained me a couple of extra degrees but a trip to the diy shop for some insulation is on the cards.

The timer control for the extract may also be the way through winter.

I'm actually enjoying the challenges a winter loft grow presents and think the ability to drop night temps will come into its own once the blueberry amnesia flowers.

Welcome to the absolute pain in the ass that is loft growing during winter! I am the exact same, was holding the lights out temps around 17 degrees and then yesterday it dropped to 12.9 degrees :eek1: This is with all the fans and extraction turned off and a heater going full tilt!

Give it another four or five weeks and see how much you're enjoying the challenge then!

Cheers,

you obviously have the benefit of experience here. But, I'm a gas safe registered heating and ventilation engineer, if I can't keep 2 cubic meters of space at room temperature I think I'll be visiting the job centre!

I stuck 1m tube heater in there which is giving me mid 20s.

I'll be raiding the stores at work next week for a heat exchanger to put on the air intake.

As you have probably learned the hard, insulation is the key. The flexi duct intake runs across part of the loft that has missing felt, so gets a right wind chill so there's a massive heat saving from insulating that. I'll be visiting the stores for that one as well!

As for the tent, I'm going the polystyrene and bubble wrap route.

What have you used.

Cheers

I've been in the loft for the last four years now and this is definitely the last winter I am going to bother growing. My lights on temps have never really been an issue but lights out is just a nightmare! I've tried everything - Tube heaters, blow heaters, insulation... All of them work but not well enough. Insulation is all well and good but you quickly reach the point where it starts to affect the lights on temps...

The only way I have been able to do it in the past was with heaters (and lots of them!). I have no doubt there is a better way to do it and no better man than a heating and ventilation engineer to figure it out  For me though, it comes down to cost. I'm just not willing to spend hundreds of £'s not to mention the on-going costs of running hundreds of watts of heaters for four hours a day.

Once I get my current lot finished, my season will be from March - October. Fuck this winter lark....

Cheers,
Hardon

Ah mate,

Don't give up!

The fact that your insulation causes you overheat probe shows you have done a sterling job!

The advantage I have over you regarding this problem is led's.

I'm also planning on some short off time.

A lot of the problems we face are reasonibly simple to fix once the insulation is sorted.(regarding temperature control).

I absolutely feel your probs regarding cost, the reason most of us grow (I assume) is financially rooted.

My tent will struggle to keep me and the missus vaping without buying ,year round if I run full chat. So I'll struggle on.

If I stumble upon something that helps the likes of me and you (the lofty growers) then all well and good.
