Hey folks,

tronN00dles here back with my second photoperiod attempt.

I currently have two seeds germinating from Canuk Seeds: Gorilla Glue #4 ("GG#4") and White Widow ("WW"). They'll be hitting coco/perlite in the next day or two. This will be my first automated irrigation/drain grow.

Stay tuned.

Here's the automatic irrigation/drain system I built:

This is largely inspired by the automatic systems outlined on cocoforcannabis.com.

I'm using a tray that fits in my 2x4 tent. Double stacked saucers will allow my run-off to drain by gravity into an intermediary collection bucket. This bucket has a pump controlled by a float switch that will automatically pump my runoff out of the tent and into a nearby bucket. Similarly, I have a second bucket that acts as my nutrient reservoir which is controlled by a timer which will irrigate my mediums through Hydro Halos. Both buckets are on wheeled trolleys for easy maneuverability, and both will sit outside of my tent.

Initial testing shows a flow rate of ~87mL per second.

I'm going to get some black heavy duty paper to cover my reservoir bucket to sheild my nutrients from light.

My seeds are currently in paper towels in my tent in the dark at 25C. I'm expecting tap-roots within the next day or 2, then they'll be transfered to nursery pots for a week or 10 days. After that, I'll be transplanting and implementing this automatic watering system.

Cheers,

tron

Amazing setup you've got there buddy!!!
Just be carefull with using those stones. They contain Calcium Carbonate and can screw up your pH, better to use something inert like foodgrade plastic or stainless steel.

Could you show some detailed pictures of that pump with float switch? Is that something you built? or can one order this somewhere?

Thanks pal! The stone's I've used in the past for my non-coco grows. But since switching to coco, I've pretty well given up on them as they're a recipe for algae growth with all the watering. I had a few finishing touches left on the irrigation tray, so the stones were temporary. Consider them gone!

As for the pump, it's this one here:

Amazon product ASIN B002XFFANC
It sits in a little 1 gallon bucket and my two saucers will drain into that. The pump switches on when there's around ~1.75" of water in the bucket. Seems to work great so far.

Day 5

Hey folks. I have two healthy 5 day old seedlings on my hands. They were a little on the stretchy side which was surprising, but by Day 3 I realized I had my timer set to 16/8 instead of 18/6 :crying:

Bumped my light intensity up a smidge to account for the lost DLI. They're looking a bit more proportional now. They're a little lime green in the center but I'm sure that'll subside when I start bumping up my feeds.

Now irrigating twice daily at ~250ppm, pH at 6.2. Temps at ~24C, RH at ~70%.
