New Grower Would like some setup critique please

I couldn't be more grateful a420er, nor asked for a more comprehensive and informative answer! I will be using the priority list you posted to divide up my budget.

On that note, this hood seems to fit my price range. It's a little bit more expensive than a CoolTube though. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PowerPlant-CoolWing-6-6-inch-Reflector-With-Glass-IEC-Cord-Set-Cool-Tube-Air-/300935308635?pt=UK_HomeGarden_Garden_PlantsSeedsBulbs_JN&hash=item461124655b

Is it worth the extra outlay over the CoolTube (given that my grow space isn't going to be more than 1m2)

Hey Nubbz, you may be getting the screws put to you on that one. It doesn't come with a base for the lamp if you look closely! You will have to purchase an E39 Mogul Base along with the wiring and plugs for it, look here and you will understand what I am talking about, http://www.ebay.com/itm/SKT-E39-4KV...6983291?pt=US_Light_Bulbs&hash=item43b3a8a6fb

Not a problem if you don't mind wiring everything up but I wanted you to be aware of it.

Good shout buddy, I didn't see that! I'm looking at this, it's a full kit, pretty pricey but I suppose you get what you pay for:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/6-Cooltube-Lumatek-Powerplant-Grow-Kit-inc-Ballast-Extraction-99-99-/300845920179?pt=UK_HomeGarden_Garden_PlantsSeedsBulbs_JN&var=&hash=item8bb7875ff3

(With the options: 600W Powerplant Magnetic Ballast, 600W Lumatek Dual Spectrum Bulb and the 6'' RAM Fan and PHAT Carbon filter)

The 6'' RAM Fan is rated at 530 CFM, almost double that of the 5'' choice. Given that I'm based in the UK where ambient temps rarely go much above 20C (apart from this summer!), is that 6'' a tad overkill?

Hello Nubbz, that is a very nice setup! You can probably get away with the 5" in those temperatures. With a vented tube your temps will be nowhere near as hot without and you really don't need to pull that much air through it so long as the bulb is enclosed. So, the 5" should be fine for you, especially considering the Fall is coming up and temps will be dropping. I suppose it will be a month or so before you get everything up and running. You will easily be able to grow with that through the Fall & Winter and that would allow you a couple of grows to fine tune everything and save a few more dollars to purchase any add ons that you may want.

I really hate to steer you up in price but honestly, I would rather have you pay 50-100 pounds more right now than to be half way through a grow and realize your plants are not going to make it because you went a little too cheap on the hood. Then you have the seeds, electricity that you have used and a month or two wasted just to have to start over again. If I didn't believe 100% in the air cooled hood I wouldn't recommend it.

Hopefully I'll be up and running next week some time. I'm very eager to get things rolling! I'm ironing out a deal for the aforementioned kit (the retailer also recommended a 5'' extraction kit) with a Powerplant Coolwing instead of the CoolTube. From what I've read the Coolwing is well worth the extra cash.

Steering me in the right direction, even if it's a costlier one, is very much appreciated. If it weren't for you and this site/community, I'd have already picked up a sub £200 complete kit and probably burned my apartment block down!

That's going to set me back around £250-270. Which leaves me around £50-80 for the tent. Unfortunately the tent you mentioned doesn't appear to be available in the UK.

What are your thoughts on the Secret Jardin DS (Budget) range?
