New Grower Stunted Seedlings Recover After Transplant

A little gentle bondage using wool and paper tape to open the plant to the light.

Flowers are developing nicely.

The only problem is Ca def, first time I've seen it in any of my grows. Adding the coco coir compost has likely reduced the buffering effect of the soil, so the pH may be out of whack. Could also be the LED effect. I may switch to my 400W HPS for the rest of the flowering to see if it helps.

If you have a 400W HPS I would grow under that the whole grow next grow. Adding some lime to the mix and maybe a little crushed egg shell or crushed oyster shell to your mix next time would be a good idea. You could also have a little nute burn as I see the tips burnt. It might not be cal issue but maybe the soil is a little hot. Either way a little lime and shell never hurt.

Hi Joe...thanks for replying. I've done a few grows with the HPS, but with the ambient temperature at 32° C, it's difficult to control the heat in the grow room. That's why I shelled out $570 for the HS1. Also, I would have to travel 700 km to get some garden lime! No delivery service either.

The problem was the tomato feed, not the pH. It's far too harsh for autos, even in small amounts. Since switching to a local brand of organic fish ferts for bloom, there has been no further 'rusting'.

Photos to follow later in the week. :pass:

:baghead:...how did I miss this? You can holler at me too, ya know, mate! ..running on fumes tonight my friend, so do pardon my hasty exit,... I'll dig in tomorrow! ....gods, if only we could get you some decent coco media or soil,...
... Cheers Canna! :pighug:

Hey, Waira...:toke:...glad you found me brother. The thread view count, which had been pathetic (not exactly a sexy topic headline, I know) jumped by 30 after you posted. How's that for star power... :smoking:

I was going to holler, but I know you've got enough on your plate atm. This wasn't even meant to be a grow journal, more an experiment in dealing with pesky stunters.
gods, if only we could get you some decent coco media or soil,...

It's getting worse: every second bag it seems is just full of crap. Nothing grows in it, not even weeds when left outside in the garden (after 8 months!). :face:

Anyway...enough of the excuses...

No new signs of Ca def; the damage was limited to the fan leaves. Pistils are just starting to brown, maybe another month to go. Which means I'm stuck with smoking the local crap over the holidays. It's enough to drive a bloke to drink... :pass:

:smoking:- yeah, I meant to do that! you my friend, are doing pretty damn well considering the shwag you have to grow in (construction waste!! :yoinks: :nono:), high RH, and limited nute' sources,... the J47 is filling in nicely actually! :greenthumb: With high RH, the transpiration machinery bogs way down, because of the low evaporation rates; this is the key to the drawing power up from the roots, along with the nute's!... coupled with that, coco coir needs to be seriously rinsed, best with a Ca-Mg solution to help knock loose the Na and K cations bound up naturally on the particles,... water alone isn't enough usually,... coco has unique CEC properties, which binds up a lot of the Ca and Mg because they displace the other cations, so it's something of a hog with Ca-Mg,... it may be that some of the coir isn't well rinsed, with really high Na content, which most plants detest (toxic at low levels on many kinds),...even the fekkin' weeds!  ... LED's seem to cause elevated demands on Ca as well, something about the nature of that type of light is monkeying with the cellular physiology/metabolism,... I'm surprised it isn't far worse, mate!-- must be the molasses,.... I imagine your water there is pretty soft? ..... Hmmm, wonder why the 'mater food is so nasty,...any info on the label?- sourcing of the base nutes, etc.,.... "soil" pH, might be in play too, but it maybe not so bad, or there'd be worse symptoms,.. coco does like to run more acidic than true soil, so,... maybe next trip to Europe, you can get an Accurate 8 soil pH probe and/or a pH meter for liquids...? --have your friend pre-order it, so it's suitcase ready when the time comes,.. or would that be dicey? hey, you grow your own tomatoes, right?! What suspicious! LOL! ..... keep gringin' my friend, and I'll thnik on things some more,...:eyebrows: ..and have anudda one 'f these for making gold outta shite! :crying: :slap:

Can't thank you enough for the rep slap and the support, bro. :bighug:

I believe there's an Accurate 8 in my immediate future, thanks to a certain Mr. Claus. :woohoo1: Should be interesting to see what's up pH-wise. I've also, as of three days ago, dug out the 400W HPS, but have throttled it back to 250W using the digital ballast. I'm using it as side lighting as that's the only setup that works. This has upped the room temp a little, but lowered the RH to around 60%. Still not ideal, but better that the 70 - 80% I would have otherwise.

Not much info on the tomato feed - total N 4% (1.2% nitric, 2.7% ureic), Phosphorus Pentoxide 4% (1.7% P), Potassium Oxide 8% (6.6% K). "High potash feed with seaweed extract and magnesium for healthy, tasty tomatoes", it says. Nothing about thrashing ganja leaves...

So here she is today:

Not often I have the opportunity to post bud porn. :yay: How ironic that a plant I nearly gave up on, that survived an open root transplant followed by a week in three inches of soil and another transplant, is turning out to be my best grow for a long while. Three more weeks... :vibe:

Nice grow, glad your girl bounced back for you!
Potting media is/was my biggest expence and I won't cut corner and go cheap there, my garden soil is bad too it's all sand mostly, one reason I started composting.
It's so nice to see how autoflowers can bounce back and grow well.
Cheers and good luck with future grows!

Thanks, Todd. :toke: Autos seem to be getting hardier; this was one that refused to die.

pH checks out at an average of 6.5. I think I just overfed with those tomato nutes. :coffee2:

Anyway, here she is yesterday, after nearly two weeks with 250W of HPS as side lighting:
