New Grower Start up (11/6/22)

Germination day 3
  • Curiosity got the better of me today. Wanted to make sure what I was doing was working. Took a slightly different approach to germing this time.
All i did was fill my pots watered em just enough to hydrate the dry soil I bought amd have been misting the top so that about the first inch of soil stays wet.
Its working, all 4 beans have a taproot.

No pics but hopefully we see a sprout in the next 24-48 hours

    Germination day 4
  • 1 peyote critical and my watermelon zkittles are above ground. Seed husk is still on the watermelon a bit but it looks like it should pop off fine.

The other 2 have a decent tap root but they havent made their way through the surface yet.

    Germination complete day 5
  • All 4 beans germinated

1st was the peyote critical in front

My last peyote critical is working its way to the surface. 14 hours after I checked this morning and its looking ok

Hopefully we see a better take off this time around since Im not stunting straight from germ by planting too deep. These I basically pressed in to the surface and covered. Glad to see all 4 are moving along.

Now that all 4 have at least broken the surface, and are sucking up light. I dialed back the light so its getting about 250ppfd for 18 hours a day. Which is about power level 2 out of 10. Light is about 20" away from the top of the bags.

Gotta say Im already loving the RS bags. Gotta get more for sure.

    Day 6 update
  • So my 2nd peyote crit is standing tall. Definitely the shortest of the 4 but its also almost a day behind the others.

All the bean husks came off well too. Good because Ive never had to pop one off before and I thought for sure the watermelon zkittles was gonna need it, but shes by far doing the best.

Anyway off to the deadzone laundromat. Probably gonna dial my updates back to once a week I just wanted everyone to know they are all there and the watermelon seems to be doing the best so far. Conditions are a little cold. Hottest it got in the tent today was 69°

    Week 1
  • So with all 4 germed, lights dialed in, I decided to thoroughly soak my medium. Maybe a little early but i watered around each seedling making sure I didnt get too much water within 3" of each plant so they should be ok

1 gallon between all 4 pots, so roughly 1/4-1/3gal in each with the prewater since the soil really dried out today.

Starting the FF feeding schedule next week. 2 feeds per week with a flush every 4th week. Thinking about doing a flush to start to add some yucca throughout the pots, but soil isnt hydrophic at all yet so thats still up in the air.

Also forgot to mention, been giving my pots a half turn every day. They are all definitely reaching for the center of the tent by the end of each day

    From top to bottom

Granite Runtz, peyote #2, peyote #1, watermelon zkittles. Id say the peyote #1 has caught up to the watermelon. Im super excited to see the difference in structure between the 2 peyote crits.

    Day 10
  • Not much to update but Im bored and still pretty sick.

Letting my soil dry out thoroughly, noticed some kind of greenish growth after soaking my pots a bit. Noticed my exhaust was set on 1 so it basically was moving no air at all, now that its set to 5 humidity has dropped from the low 60s to the high 40s-low 50s. The temp has also stabilized at about 72. So conditions are good right now. I brushed some soil around to make sure there was still some moisture under the dried out surface.

Next week its suppose to be in the single digits at night so I may have to get a portable heater for my basement over the winter. We'll cross that bridge when it comes though. Found out I have about 400 bucks in cash back on my credit card I use for gardening so if I do need one I can get it right away and free so thats nice.

    Day 12
  • Just wanted to pop in and let everyone know I got my grated pot risers today, already got one under each pot. My saucers are coming on saturday and my wicking cord should be here tomorrow. Will not be using the wicking bases right away. Gonna wait till a good root system is established first, so it will just be wicking any runoff back into the pots for now. Then I will only be top watering maybe 1 time per week just to make sure water is making it to the top half of the pot but only if its visually dry.

Also bought 8lbs of what was advertised as coarse perlite to spread over the top of my pots, and its actually 8lbs of small polished river rock. I'll keep it to mix in my next batch of soil but I wanted perlite to help hold in moisture and break up and oxygenate the water on the way down. Unfortunately I dont think this will help because its polished smooth and not porous.

Other than that update, plants are doing ok. Heres a pic of each one.

    Day 13
  • 20221117_071407.jpg

Gave the girls about 16oz of water each last night, also with a little bit of feed and I think they liked it. Definitely grew a bit over night. 2nd set of true leave are in on almost all of them, beside that peyote thats a day behind everything else.

Also it doesnt come in on the photos well, but both peyote criticals have this orangish purple hue to the surface of the leaves as they grow in but fades when the leaves have come fully in.

Not concerned just think its kinda neat and hoping that orange comes through in flowering, it would be nice to see an array of colors in here if I got the right phenos, looks like besides the limited info on the granite runtz that the other 3 could go purple/orange which would be cool to say the least.

    Week 2
  • So all my drugs mainly the steroids gave me some energy and all my stuff for my wicking bases came in, think Im gonna line the outside with some expanded clay pepples or some coarse perlite to help keep water in there and not evaporating. Maybe even just some sand.

Im kinda testing this out and 2 plants have shorter to medium leads into the saucers below the grates and the other 2 have long leads. The shorter ones are about 3 to 4 inches. Just enough to hit the bottom and curl up a bit and the others are about double that so a lot coiled in the saucers. I wanna see which one works the best. Have a feeling that the longer leads are gonna be the way to go but who knows. Heres some pics

    Risers $8 amazon
Wicking rope $8 for 120ft amazon
Saucers $24.99 for 4-16" on amazon
