Scrog net . Size and when to place

Curious to know what your entire yield was in the 8x4? That's a big yield for a single auto wow. Also when do you usually top
The other plants weren’t as big, but fairly hefty. I had 1/2 the tent full of photos in veg. I didn’t weigh the others because to be honest, the big girl stole the show and got all of the attention.

A lot of it was just dumb luck, and finding a unicorn I suppose. Funny thing was that she was the runt and I thought I’d have to yank her. I topped when she hit the 5th node, but it took awhile for her to get there.

Awesome man. It's funny how runts a lot of the time turn out to be big impressive bitches.

Yeah it sure is. I remember topping her and thinking "oh. maybe I shouldn't have done that.". She was just hugging the soil and I seriously considered yanking her. Then, she blew up.

To be honest, dunno if scrogging helped at all with actual size. I just find that in this case, she was way in the back right corner, surrounded by 3 other autos. I couldn't really get to her after they all got big enough. And the photos on the other side got massive - if you look on the Live Photography subforum, I just posted a picture of one of those photos that is outside now. So I guess the scrog did help as far as opening her up enough. As you can see, there's a lot of undergrowth there, and some larf, on the bottom. But nothing went to waste.

Topping? That's been debated for a bit in traditional gardening, which I've been doing for a long time. Longer than this type of gardening. I've topped and not topped various plants, and don't know if it increased those yields at all. But certainly helps with plant structure.

I think autos are so much fun, and a great challenge. I'm trying to get some type of system down, top, train, scrog. And will tinker a bit with it next run in the 4x2. One thing I am doing is experimenting with 10 gallon pots vs the 7 gallon I normally use. And next run I am experimenting with 10 gallon TALL pots vs standard 10 gallon to see if that makes a difference.

I took over half a pound my first grow with one plant, that was comple dry and broken right down to get rid of as much stem as I could. The plant was grown in a 5 gallon pot. 4-2 tent.

Yeah man, I mean my other 3 autos next to that one above were no slouches. I'm really into using larger pots. Even my "smaller" plants get fairly hefty.

I'm excited about these 10 gallon tall pots next run. They take up way less floor space. If my hopeful theory is correct, they will stay in veg longer if the taproot doesn't bottom out as quickly as it does in standard pots. My motto now is heavy veg = heavy flower. And that seems achievable with a larger pot. Now, I'm trying to figure out how to induce a harder stretch now on a consistent basis. But it seems like it's a roll of the dice with the autos. If I can consistently get a decent stretch like the one above, it would be amazing.

Thankyou all for your feedback, I’ve had the same reservations myself after many YouTube videos. I’ve already topped both mygirls at day 19 and 20. Today they are 3 weeks old , so yes that doesn’t leave enough time to fill that scrog, it would just end up being one of those ugly trellis grows. Maybe I just stick to lst .we shall see. Thanks again peoples.

So, I think the objections here to autos and scrog would be fairly legit in regards to autos maybe remaining a bit more "compact". Maybe rendering the net sort of useless as a true scrog. But in a cramped tent, or a tent like my 8x4 in my shop where hey...it's a fucken 8x4 I HAVE to put it against the wall and can't get to the back doors, scrog/netting can really help.

But one thing I would mention, in my experience with these plants and many others, is that it's really hard to follow a "guide" on WHEN to top. Or when you "should" do anything really. Meaning, one size doesn't fit all. 21 days seems like a decent guide. But what if your plant isn't at the fifth node yet? Maybe she's a little slower than the rest? Meaning she likely/or at least could/will go longer, and possibly bigger than the rest - we hope?

That is when observation of a given plant comes into play. If I'm planning on topping and the plant puts out that fifth node at day 15, I'm doing it then. And if it takes up to the 30th day to show that node, I'm doing it then. I find that if I'm following whatever observation skills I've acquired over time and topping based on plant behavior, not a schedule, it's generally just more productive. YMMV and some may disagree which is all good.

Curious on this too. I've never scrogged with autos, but I'm going to try it on my upcoming photo run. I'm having trouble deciding on 2", 2.5" or 3" hole sizes. Anyone have any comments on this?
The bigger you go the easier it will be to remove from net.

I was into this tall pot idea a while ago and I forgot all about it. I remember I got fabric pots and they where taller than previous ones, the autos I noticed did seem to veg longer, they just went that bit longer. I remember reading somewhere that auto roots are different in a sense that when the tap root hits the bottom of the pot that there is some kinda hormone response. So taller pots would make sense.

Exactly. I picked up some tall 10 gallon fabrics over at 247garden. Off the top of my head, I want to say that they’re about 6-7” taller than the standard 10 gallon fabric I’m trialing now. But about 4-5” slimmer. That’s a big difference. They can actually fit into 14” saucers. The 10 gallon I’m running now takes a 20” saucer, it’s massive, and obviously eats up almost 1/2 of the floor space in my summer 4x2.

Got a Zkittlez in there now in a 7 gallon standard, almost done. So the next one going in will either be a Mephisto or a Night Owl in a tall 10. We shall see.

Awesome, like minded man, I just planted zkittlez last week. Also some cream mandarin XXL. The cream mandarin is the tastiest strain I've ever had. Highly recommend
