Real Science vs Bro Science: Ohhh some of you are NOT going to like this!

Select defoiliation is actually needed and you see the plant does it by itself to a handful of leaves also science has shown that it works as long as pulling leaves that only get around 250 to 300 ppfd bc anything lower will suck energy from the parts that get more ppfd bc of that lost energy you loose yield. Now I will say I feel like most over defoiliate which could cause a drop in yield. Also had to share this a buddy's grow south of the border look @ this mutant really interested in how it turns out

I don't know if a scientific study has been done on cannabis. I do know however that it has been proven it increase cotton crops by up to 20% I believe. I think a couple other crops have been tested. And it's good to see you question this! Too many people just go along with anything they are told. Question EVERYTHING, it's the only way to get to the facts!

Howdy fellow Auto lovers. This is my first day here and first post. So I thought I would kick it off by giving the pot a real good stir.

Could defoliation be bro science and actually giving you smaller harvests?

The only advantage I see defoliation having is that your whole plant will be ready to harvest on the same day. But apart from that if you pull leaves off a plant you reduce the total amount of photosynthesis the plant can accomplish which would reduce your rate of growth and flower weight production.

It makes sense if you just want to grow a few big colas and you want to pull the whole plant on the same day.

I also understand that defoliation reduces the risk of mould because you increase air flow but this can also be overcome by adding extra fans and running a fast finishing pheno

I know that pretty much everybody is doing it but everytime I've seen a side by side defol vs non defol the non defol yields heavier. And it from a logical point of view it makes sense because pulling off leaves makes it a smaller plant overall which in theory would mean smaller yield right?

Mmmmmmmmmmmm..................cotton seed meal from Texas panhandle gins. Panhandle cotton is not sprayed to kill it to harvest, early frost does it. Great in compost. I'd have to refresh current research to see if it would be good for canna.
You keep on bringing up stuff for me to think about.

That's my goal with threads like this, to make people think. I'm glad you find it thought provoking!

I did not go through this entire thread, but here is a summary of all of her mythbusting topics:

I thought defoliation in cotton was to make processing easier at harvest.

The defoliation rabbit hole..
Indoors I often defol on days 21 and 42. I have seen better yields but unsure if its because of increasing energy to bud sites or something to do with decreasing transpiration and humidity in the room?..
I have done side by sides of total defoliation at day 42 and observed increased trichome coverage so I tend to do that on most rotations.
I do a moderate defol outdoors mid bloom also to alllow better air movement, ensuring I remove leaves from site and not use them as mulch around plant for fear of increasing chances of botrytis. It makes a good plant juice ferment.
Edit: that's photoperiod plants I'm talking about, just realised I'm on the afn
