my two autos are under 120w cfls for now. when my 250w hps hood gets here ill use that for one and use both cfls for the other. how high should the 250w hps be above one plant?

put your hand under the lamp and you can feel how close you can have it. It should feel comfortable. About 15-20 cm i would guess.

Yea, I would just stick your hand at the canopy of your plants and make sure it's not burning.
Do you have any pics of your autos SASquad?
If your plants are small enough you should be able to put two of them under a 250 watt pretty easy.
