the object with feeding is to find the plants sweet spot, this is where the ph and ec remain stable
between veg and the end of pre-flower stretch is where you will spend most the time increasing feed each week, by the end of pre-flower stretch you should be fully dialed in
if the ec drops increase the feed untill its stable
if the ec increases add more water to lower the feed ratio
when you hit the sweet spot they consume both water and feed at the same ratio so as the res empties the ph and ec remain the same, by topping off with water all im doing is slightly under feeding as ive more or less found their threshold , a lot of hydro growers like to push their plants until they see the leaf tips turn yellow as this tells them your at breaking point but the best way is to monitor the ec and ph
once you find a plants threshold you can then manipulate the plant even more by switching ratios as long as you dont go over her max ec, for example if the plant has a limit of 2.0ec i can make her pk stronger by switching the ratios but not exceeding the 2.0
i know people who grow the same strain over and over again (uk cheese) and they know that strain inside out every step of the way, what she is gonna do and when she is gonna do it and thats kinda the best connection you could ever get with plants, the amount of commitment to just 1 strain being grown over and over again to get that level of understanding is pure passion and every strain will have their own prefrences as to what makes them happy and its down to the grower to help them express that
its very rare i top up with nutrients unless its pk week
