Northern Lights x Purple Kush

Thanks huckstah, I will take that simplified info into consideration and apply it once I do another breeding run. I will probably go ahead and take my F1 PL seeds and cross them with a real purple, high yielding purple kush for a f2, take those seeds, then do that again for an f3. Does that sound about right? Sorry, soaking all of this info in at first is a mindfuck lol

Sounds good. If this is your first rodeo, id recommend planting atleast 7-10 of those F1 seeds to increase your odds of getting a plant has that perfect mix your looking for. Like, I said, your F1 seeds are not going to be identical plants when you grow them. Some will show some of the dominant genes of the male, while some will show the dominant strains of the female, and some hopefully and even mix of both. Once you get to F3, F4, those seeds will be stable enough to give you the exact results you want everytime, and can be very profitable. F3 stable seeds go for 20-30 bucks, compared to F1 or F2 seeds that are are the typical 10 dollar seeds you find on the street.

By the way, if you are going to playing with Silver, I recommend starting off using the CS (colloidal silver) method. It's great to learn on, and non-toxic as opposed to STS methods. It's also less complicated, but just as effective. I personally will not buy seeds or bud that was exposed to STS...its extremely toxic, and there have been virtually no scientific studies on how much STS is contained in the seed. Breeding plants may be playing God, but exposing them and yourself to toxic chemicals is playing the Devil :)

I don't want to push you farther than you can handle, but the secret to breeding autoflowers is crossing them with regular strains, and then re-crossing them back to autoflower. Crossing autoflowers generally don't produce the results you are looking for. There's simply too much "ruderalis" in the genes, and the plants don't really cross characters such as "yield" or "potency" as much. It's kinda like crossing a mutt with a mutt...you just get another mutt. You gotta add some STRONG genes to get true results.

I believe you mentioned you are trying to cross NL with PK? I'd recommend taking a NL autoflower, crossing it with a regular Purple Kush. Thats your F1. Cross that F1 back to NL autoflower for F2, making sure you pick the shortest plants to cross. Take that F2 and cross it back again to NL autoflower and the F3 should be a true autoflower with PK/NL properties.

Also I want to warn you about this, since this is going to be something that drives you crazy if you are getting into breeding: DORMANT GENES.

The reason I'm warning you about this is because you are trying to cross two autoflowers, and thats going be an upredictable potluck of results. You have to understand that the deeper the lineage of the plant, the more difficult it is to predict when trying to cross it with other plants. Auto-flowers have a diverse lineage by default, and that easily doubles the complication of this, and make it a real pain in the ass if you are impatient. I'll give you an example:

Just because a Purple Kush may display the dominant gene that has a purple trait, it also has a dormant gene that wants something completely different. Perhaps this dormant gene prefers a white/orange coloration. Its the same thing in concern to humans eye color, hair color, etc. If you cross that PK with a plant that has white/orange genes ready to activate that otherwise dormant gene, you won't achieve any purple traits at all. Now you have a plant with dormant purple genes, and dominant orange. Dormant genes are a pain in the ass because they are generally unpredictable, and thats because Cannabis strains have been crossed and re-crossed so many times.

Your results during your first season will intimidate you...you'll see so much variety, on top of dormant genes making special appearances. It's very confusing and unstasfactory at F1 level. Just look at your plants, and go with your gut. Don't let it overwhelm you. By the time you get to f2 and f3, youll start getting more confidence picking that PERFECT plant you were planning to turn into a strain. I highly recommend buying the original lowryder, and crossing it with regular strains, then recrossing back to autoflower. You're dealing with alot less genetic accidents, and youre going to get much better results when trying to increase whatever trait you are going for, whether thats color or taste or yield.

Long story short: Get the genes for your flavor, yield, and potency from a regular plant. Get your short-life and stunted growth genes from the auto. Trying to get flavor or potency by crossing two auto's won't produce dramatic results, specifically the ones you are aiming at.

Thanks for all that info huck. Got it all noted down in the logs. Sounds like a LONG process to get one stable 'purple' dominant auto. If I do end up doing a breeding run again, I'm going to take a real nice purple kush auto and cross her into a heavy yielding strain and keep her auto. I want something with the yield of 'Think different' but with the bag appeal and dominant properties of the purple kush. If you want to see the f1 log of the purple kush x northern lights, here is an album Purple kush x northern lights dwc grow

She did autoflower between the 3rd-4th week but her stretch was OUT OF CONTROL, exceeding 3 feet and bushing out real wide! There was no real purpling all over the buds like the purple kush auto normally looks like. Only bits purple here and there. She was a good smoke despite the devastation of the tent and the early chop.

I wouldn't mind growing her again, but because of ocd, I really want to get that purple to be dominant :p
