Mephisto Genetics Nebula Grow Journal - an 8x4 full of Mephistos

I am definitely going to have a learning curve and some struggles. I have read so much over the past two months my head is spinning out on organics! But I live for learning new things and reading. Better to just jump in the pool and get it going.

I'm sure there will be plenty to learn and my hope is to get through this grow with healthy plants and a solid living soil. Weight doesn't matter right now. In an 8x4 I should be fine with what I yield to start off :smoking:

It can be tough figuring out where to start with organics. I think the key is to just start!

Definitely mate. Jump in at the deep end! This way I can learn from your first go! :worship: :vibe: :d5:

@NebulaNuggets would you mind giving a run down on your soil. I'm gonna be doing one also. I don't want to wait for soil to cook so I've ordered some stuff to throw together, much like yours.
I'm thinking of doing a side by side, organic soil vs Promix with Advanced Nutrients. I suspect AN will yield more. It's the difference in quality, I am curious about.

Yeah no problem, been meaning to do that somewhere. @Yeatster This is all of what put in my mix and cooked ten days. 9 seeds of 12 sprouted (none of the 3 white n bubblies have yet?) and all look happy so far!

Base Mix
1 part compost locally sourced at $34 a yard which is 200 gal of compost
1 part premiere peat which was $12 a bale at Lowes
1 part aeration - 80% pumice sourced locally - 100 gal for $40, 10% bio char which I charged with a tea for 24 hours, and 10% black lava sand
this mix is retaining water pretty well but has proven to be just fine for starting seeds in

Additions
Oyster Shell Flour
Gypsum
Kelp Meal
Alfalfa Meal
Crab Meal
Fish Bone Meal
Azomite
Neem Seed Cake
Sea Bird Guano
Bio Live - Down to Earth - probably not needed since it contains a lot of what I already added, has bene bacterias and mycos
Malted Barley - ground up in coffee grinder

Most everything I used at 1/4 to 1/2 strength of recommended amount on bag. The azomite, alfalfa and sea bird guano I went lightest. maybe half dose for neem, kelp and bio live, and a little more on the oyster shell, crab, fish bone meal.
It was easiest for me to mix in a 50 gal sterilite with 15 gallons of soil at a time. Mixed and mixed til my arms hurt, then mixed some more!

Inoculate with a Tea and let sit for 10 days. I brewed one with mainly EWC, Recharge and some malted barley, a little kelp. Added a little Full Power to the tea after it brewed and cut the tea with 2 parts water 1 part tea.
Wanted to add some manure but did not want to have to cook for a month or more.

So that's where I am at. Interestingly the seeds all sprouted much quicker than in the Bu's (the white n bubblies are in two pots with the Bu's) so it could be the seeds, could be the Bu's. Not sure?

Oh yeah and a top layer of mulch at about 1-2" was added which was mostly composted mulch from pine, some black lava sand and leaves/random decomposing organic material from the yard for the worms. Hoping to have them create lots of good EWC in the soil nice and fresh, giving me less work LOL

Planted lots of clover and herbs, all doing great and sprouting like crazy

Thanks Nugs. That's a whole lot more than I've got planned. I'm trying to get by on the cheaper side and I plan to mix and pot. Hopefully I won't have to do much more than a tea here and there. I'm skeptical about sourcing locally. Not much in the way of organics around here. To be fair, I haven't looked that hard either. I will get there. I'll tag you when I'm up and running. Thanks again!

@Yeatster Yeah it was more than I had anticipated but all in all for a less than $300 I have enough soil and ingredients that I can begin to experiment a little. and start a veggie garden. I Plan to get some manure and mix up a batch to cook for a couple months for the next grow.

If you think about the cost of nutes (which would add up for me in an 8x4) it's a no brainer. I haven't even used a ph pen since I started this grow.

Also, I haven't grown in almost five years. I didn't have a tent or any type of established method. I thought if I was starting over from the ground up that I should make organics the foundation. Now if I had been growing and running a nice room for a few years it would have been much much more difficult to make the transition.

Here's the mess of a situation in my 8x4. I have shitty rope ratchets that don't work and not enough room for the T5's for vegging. Thought I'd put up the cmh and hps with duct work first, raise lights up and hang T5 fixtures below. But the rope ratchets I have will only raise lights and get stuck. They don't go back down....:wall: this is incredibly aggravating as you could imagine. I am going to remedy the situation tomorrow. However, I really don't like the hps and was thinking I should just buy a damn cob already and do it right. Here's what it looks like now

Would look a hell of a lot nicer with a couple hundred watts of COB instead of the hps/T5 mess that currently exists. Once the plants veg enough I planned on going with the CMH/HPS combo. I think it's possible to add the cob to the mix.

I have about $200 to invest, maybe a little more. For all you cob guys out there, where should I start as far as entering into cob's? I'd like to run 2 or 3 cobs and add to them after a grow, then get rid of the hps all together. I have read somewhere that a cob can be had for around $1 per watt. Is this a pipe dream?

Thanks for any help with this!!! Have to go mess with lights for an hour now so I can water LOL

I love the t5 for seedlings. And I'm seriously down for BigSmo's lights. You really cant beat the ability to hang single cobs @ different heights. I have a 300w older cob model light, PLC CX300 and I love it. But, I would trade in a heartbeat for the diversity of single cobs.
