Grow Mediums Natty roots

My roots look like the netpot on the right; a few big tap root and some small roots with a ball of roots under water.

But I see photos like this and wonder how to make that much roots come out of the netpot.

Does this have to do with water level? I think early in this grow the water level might have been a little high..could that have stunted my root growth?

My roots are like the small ones...I want the big oneszzz.

Side note: added ZHO and aquashield two days ago; saw a bunch of new white roots this morning. so maybe that was the missing element for crazy roots. Also I've been leaving water level a bit lower and in conjunction with above additives I am stoking.
