Dutch Passion My first hydro grow: 2 DP StarRyder, GHE Waterfarm, 150W HPS and tons of questions

Nice, What kind of nutes are you using ? On your last grow did you have to trim the lower half ? Keep it up..... looking great :D

Thanks! I use Hesi nutes (Root Complex, Hydro Grow, Hydro Bloom, PK13/14, SuperVit, PowerZyme) with Advanced Hydroponics pH regulators.

The size is really becoming a problem now; I had to change the lamp cooling today to be able to have the plants grow as high as possible but the reflector is as high as I can hang it now. They're at 110 and 115cm. The new cooling solution is two much faster fans along with a third one added below; the 20cm fan on the left is gone. It's pretty windy in there now but as long as the fans don't blow directly on too many budsites I think I'll be ok.
I'll most likely apply netting and/or LST tomorrow to keep them from growing any taller.

I always remove dead or dying foliage at the lower levels anyway, I think everyone does that. And I like to remove more foliage right before they really kick into flower. I used to go crazy on that and remove 50%+ of foliage which didn't lead to the yield I was looking for. I found removing 20-35% of lower growth - depending on plant size and lighting obviously - improves yield since I always used to throw the lower popcorn buds into my hash bags, now I have slightly less to make hash with but noticeably more to smoke :D

Hey Keyser, could you show us some close ups of the flowers?? Looking quite lush from over here. have you started with the PK already??

Day 63 update.

Well... they just keep growing, slower than before but still. It's crazy, I was expecting 50cm plants and they're pushing on 120cm and 125cm now. I removed the pump wiring from the room and put it on the outside so I could raise the reflector to the current maximum possible height. A multisocket outlet for those pumps was still lying atop the reflector before.

Then I moved the Adjust-A-Wings from the right more into the center of the room and adjusted it to be broader, straighter and lower. I'm planning to modify the reflector's suspension to gain 5cm. Once that is done and I can put the reflector up against the ceiling of the room I'll add the netting pretty much right below the reflector and bend those plants to my will.

Tomorrow is the start of "bloom" week 4 of a theoretical 4-6, I watered them today at EC 2.2. I'm having huge doubts about that 10-12 weeks seed to harvest timeframe. It seems I messed up a lot of things without noticing or I just got the atomic mutant pheno that grows larger and longer than others. Time will tell if noone else can.

That said though I'm extatic. I've simply never ever had plants with stems that fat, nor have I ever had autos this big - my AutoMazars always maxed out at ~100cm in soil. I've never had autos with anywhere near this much leaf growth, nor have I ever seen that many "real" budsites on single plants of mine before, real as in "should produce at least 1g of dry bud".
They look healthy too, real nice green from top to bottom. I can't find a single yellow leaf. Never had that before either, there were always one or two dying leaves somewhere.
If they show the same enthusiasm for growing bud that they show for growing vertically I think I'm in for a treat (or two). Wish me luck :D

FYI for pc fan newbies: I usually have a bunch of these lying around in various sizes and speeds, the ones I used were 2 12cm Sharkoon fans with unknown rating that originally had blue LEDs I had to cut off (my guess would be 12V ~0.4A) and 1 Scythe 12cm fan (12V 0.4A). Make sure you don't use ultra silent 0.07A ones or anything like them, they're nice for cooling low power PCs but not 150W+ lamps near plants. Also make sure to have a few cm between the fans and the wall, otherwise they won't be able to move as much air as they could. You can use 1-2 cable ties per screwhole to create and keep some distance to the wall. You can also use cable ties to hang them up like I do.
If you use faster fans (I have a bunch of extra wide Scythe 12cm fans at 12V 0.6A and 133cfm, you do not want to get your finger in there...) you can cool a 600W HPS just fine. I once built a nice Adjust-A-Wings 600W HPS pc fan airducting system using a few metal rods with screwholes in the sides from a CD rack, 1 of those extremely fast and rather audible fans before and after the lamp to move the air, kitchen wrapping foil and ~50cm of ducting. The hot air was blown from behind the lamp to the front inside the see-through ducting I built, then taken up by the 2nd fan and blown out above the reflector, it worked a treat and allowed me to move the lamp closer to the plants and to keep using my beloved Adjust-A-Wings. To replicate this consider building a different lamp socket holder than the one supplied with Adjust-A-Wings reflectors though, I put the original round lamp socket along with the metal parts of the socket holder into my clear airducting system using - you may have guessed it - cable ties. That'll improve airflow a lot. It would also probably be better to have the fan blow onto the lamp from the front instead of from behind.

@insert name here Thanks! Your close ups are below.

I've actually been using PK13/14 for two weeks today and just upped the dosage to 7.5ml/10l... since I've never used it before and am also completely new to hydro I just wasn't sure when to start. Hesi says to start with 2.5ml/10l the first week, then go to 5, 7.5 and 15ml/10l finally. Then flush the last week. So I had to plan 4 weeks of PK13/14 and 1 week of flush so I put that at the end of the 12 week cycle and tomorrow we enter week 10.
So it seems like they will probably not finish on time. Do you have any advice for me? I thought if they were to actually take longer than 12 weeks I'd just keep them on EC 2.2, 15ml/10l PK13/14 until 1 week before they go down, is that ok? Can I go even higher EC wise? Hesi says 2.2 max.
Oh and would you happen to know more about SuperVit btw? I can't help but tinker with things so I've been giving 3 drops per 10l instead of 2 drops for a week or two, is that a bad idea?
EDIT: I just read the updates to your own diary and it seems you're new to PK too so never mind :joint:

I'm not sure how close you wanted those close-ups and the forum software always makes the pics so small so I took a whole bunch of them.

Keyser, let me ask a stupid question, Are you using just the bloom nutes on your plants? unless you got really lucky and you have the rare 100 day pheno, your plants look like they are still vegging, at this phase day 63, you should be seeing some heavy bud development, I have heard that if you give an auto more nitrogen it will continue to veg for a while longer and grow, but that is not what you are wanting right now!!! Just trying to get my head around this one. And btw, I am going to use the PK this time around, thanks for the tips!!!

Another quick update: Despite my best efforts I wasn't able to talk them into stopping vertical growth... so we're at 123cm and 128cm respectively which is why the netting is now mandatory to keep them "low".

I've also replaced the Adjust-A-Wings' suspension as planned, I can now hang it a lot closer to the top of my 170cm room which, along with the netting, should hopefully allow me to keep them from burning up.

Oh and I put the heat spreader back on for now so the heat is directed more to the sides; I'm not sure whether that will improve cooling or make it worse, we'll see.

@insert name here: That's all very possible! It looks to me like they're going into flower now but they've definitely taken their sweet time in the veg phase. I'm not sure when they'll get more bud development on but let's hope it's soon, the sites are there just waiting to put on weight. Don't forget though, today is day 64 from seed, not counting like many others from when they have 2-4 true leaves; that was day 15 (when I took the first pics on page 1) so we're at around day 50 if you want to count like that. They're definitely late but I didn't think they were thaaaaat late.

Am I using just the bloom nutes - um, sort of, yeah? I'm not entirely sure what you're getting at. I currently use around 65ml/10l Hesi Hydro Bloom + 3dr/10l SuperVit + 7.5ml/10l PK13/14 and the Advanced Hydroponics PH- bloom which leaves me with a pH of 5.8 and an EC of 2.2mS, the plants each drink a little less than 2l a day. I exchanged the lamps and nutes for their flowering counterparts on day 43 from seed after flushing them.

If anyone has any advice they'd like to share please do!

Hey guys, sorry but I didn't have time to post the last two updates. I've had a lot on my plate and also played around with various netting to keep the plants "short" but in the end had to move them to my old 120x120x200cm room.

Since the last update I've watered them twice; once at EC 2.2mS with 7.5ml/10l PK13/14 and yesterday at the same EC but with 15ml/10l. I'll keep the feed like that for at least a week, then I might change it to EC 2.4mS.

Today we're entering the 11th week from seed and 5th week of flowering nutes and lamp and they're just starting to smell a little. It's clear they won't finish within the usual 10-12 weeks so I've adjusted my schedule to accomodate 98 days or 14 weeks.

They are both 135cm tall at the highest point and seem to be just about done growing vertically; they're also pretty level now due to the netting and have lots of high branches with budsites on... #2 has 13 similarly high "top colas".

The last few days were very stressful for them and they lost a couple of leaves so they'll probably spend the next few days healing and adjusting to the new room. I'm still optimistic that they'll finish within a month though. I just hope I'm right... I'm almost out of weed.

Day 67 from seed

Day 70 from seed

Once again sorry I didn't post guys, I'm still around but the last few weeks were pretty stressful. Hopefully that will change now.

So what's up, well not much really. I think I'll probably be able to chop them both down around day 105, aka after week 15. They didn't grow towards the stars anymore, just ryding now.

The dehumidifier is doing its job just fine, we're always between 42-55% RH. pH 5.8, EC 2.4mS. The smell went from forest + bananas to pineapple, apparently from both even though they look so different.

The pics don't really do the plants justice - they're monstrous (for indoor autos) when you sit in their shadow. They still have a lot of bud formation to do so 25 days seems about right.

Day 73 from seed

Day 75 from seed

Day 77 from seed

Day 80 from seed (today)

Thanks, this grow has been anything but what I was expecting. I just hope the smoke itself is what I'm hoping for

I still can't really make out whether it's the same or two different phenos. The forest smell seems to have come and gone within a week or so and the optical difference could be due to me tying most of #2's hydra heads down for a while.

Bud formation has been quite rapid recently, some of #2s "top colas" (in the back, not really visible on the photos) look like I could take them down in a week; I'm not planning to though, hopefully I'll be able to squeeze enough hash from my saved trimmings to keep me high until the ladies are ready which I think will be somewhere in or after week 15. I expect to be forced to harvest them in 2 stages.
