I am HID/CFL so I can provide no insight on your question.
However side lighting itself is a topic for discussion. Hopefully we will get some folks chiming in.
Here is my outlook from a rookie indoor grower who has used significant side lighting on two full grows (1000W HID & 4x 42W CFL):
Positive:
- Extra light to lower popcorn buds to increase yield.
Negative:
- Extended life of lower foliage, adding to the difficulty of timing your harvest. As it is, the topper is ready before the lower foliage most of the time. Keep the lower foliage alive longer; do the math.
- Increased power bill for......nicer popcorn buds. Buds I have been throwing in those "specially marked jars."
This said, the negatives may not be applicable for LED, I have never worked LED.
Because I am a power freak and a Redneck, I still use them on my fourth grow. Currently I stop using them after mid-bloom. I also use them more for "corner lighting" where my hood is weak.
