I am new to growing so dont shoot me for a silly question. HA HA!!! What is the benefit of topping the plant. I thought this was only something you did if it was getting to tall and close to the lights.
Topping is a training method. Pinch the top off and it makes 2 main colas instead of 1 which can increase yield. Keeps the plant shorter also for indoor growing. I dont always top tho. Sometimes I just tie the branches down with LST only. Sometimes I'll top and LST. Plant training is done to increase yields.

I'm new to all this also. Havent even started growing yet. I am just learning from people on here before I give it a go. This looks like a good start tho Northern Lights!

Welocome to AFN. And thank you for tagging along. If you have any questions make sure you ask on here. Lots of good growers to guide you on your way.

Keep in mind that topping is a stress training technique to help the plant grow out rather than straight up.. Or like a busy and not a Christmas tree. It's not really about yield.. Yes, you get more tops.. But the number of tops doesn't equal yield. Depending on the pheno of the plant, topping can increase, decrease or have no effect at all on yield. The purpose of topping is to break the apical dominance of the main cola. Doing this sends a signal to the plant to focus it's energy on growing side branches, rather than just the one main cola. All of the branches start to race to be the dominate cola, which is the one tallest branch or the closest to the light.

100 percent accurate. I do it to try to increase my yield. I like growing a shorter bushier plant rather than a tall Christmas tree. Easier to control and they dont outgrow my space.

I fimm if I do anything.....with autos I will likely do nothing. Not much time to recover, its a short time in the tent. But if you FIMM instead of TOP you get 4 main colas back....Not the 2 colas you get with a TOPPING.

To fimm you slice off 75% of the top.......Fimming is a great technique for photoperiod plants.
