Where'd ya go to school? Chico, Humboldt State? I lived in and out of the Bay Area for 30 years. Had the option to go to Chico or Cal and elected to go to Cal on a soccer scholarship. Was mostly up in Sonoma county late 90s through the 2000's. Spent a lot of time up in Mendo and Humboldt. Still have quite a few friends up there and get out usually once or twice a year.
I've been collecting some classics as of late. Got a sweet Chem 91, Chem D, ECSDiesel, Chaco sour d, Grass Valley hash plant, and a cut of the VA Beach Afghani! Also picked up some hash plant seeds from 86 that are S1 and some Williams Wonder, and some stuff from Gooeybreeder. That guy has plants from the 70s!
Big Kudos to all those that have preserved the genetics! Lot of time and money to keep it up!
I was in prime territory, Arcata at HSU back then!
...interesting times... CAMP was winding up like crazy (campaign against marijuana production), and herb was becoming more and more expensive.
A good friend up there, his dad was part of a grow co-op and I got stories of the troubles they had. Disappearing fast were the days of hillsides covered in plants, too risky! Punk-ass cops left notes like "weak crop, see next year--in cuffs" behind as well... By the '90's the shit was worth more than gold per oz, remember that insanity?
I try not to think about the seeds I threw out too, of many fine indi-hybrid heirlooms that are now long extinct...
Who knew? LOL!
T20M's Humboldt Affy heirloom is legit, worth a run trust me-
The olde guard is still some of the best! They may not be "30%THC" but who give two shits and a wipe, really?? So you have to
suffer taking a couple-few more tokes--oh the horror
....so many of today's pop culture clown tokers have zero sophistication, it's all about the stoopid cutesie names/"flavors" marketing hype, and the mindless pursuit of THC% because unfortunately the market forces have made that the sole criterium for wholesale pricing -
... it did NOT start out this way...
Those other newer modern foundation cuts like Chem's, SD's are becoming more and more prized as the true blue genetics become watered down more and more...
It's funny, you look at lineage diagrams and it becomes so clear how thin the family branches are down at the base, so many forks lead to the same core cultivars... Just shows what massive selective breeding and pheno chasing can do!
The fucking Cookie Family and affiliates play around in some of the shallowest gene pools I can think of, and they are rolling in $$..almost disgusting really, but Kudos for them for playing the Game like they have.
Personally I never found GSC to be any better than 100 other lesser known hybrid cuts, and I do remember when GSC was the smash hit new chick on the block. Lots of blame to the cheesey Cups/competitions... Win one of those and you're suddenly a genius star and your genetics are the new gold--
pffff! ... same deal, pop culture hype whether it's music, buds, whatever, is all the difference...
I'm at another private forum too, where many of them are long time growers, breeders, preservationists. Lots of '70's, 80's, even some 60's cultivars held and IBL'ed. "Sativa" (quotes because the conventional terms are plain wrong as far as taxonomic classification goes) lovers abound!
Many grow the old school stuff, and long cycle equatorials, etc. for the unique high they offer. And they are spot on right! But few folks are into 16+ weeks blooming
... One cat has this amazing Destroyer pheno, a "pearl" type (think Dr. Grinspoon) that forms massive single calyxes on a wire thin stem, just smothered in resin -->
Other fun stuff from retired breeders making auto versions of some things. I grew some early work of Punto Rojo in' 22, F3 cross made with his long held C99 auto... awesome! I did get strongly PR leaning pheno's, and the buzz was amazing -
zippy trippy stuff!
So was another fab' cross Doors x Orig. Haze, all passion bred, and this cross was an unaccountable speed queen. Outside in Germany and UK, about 9 weeks blooming; mine was under 8 in small pots!
The miracle is that such long cycle genetics in the parents lead to this crazy speed, and still offered that special high... The breeder was on a real quest for his beloved Haze's, sourced several variants and worked them for 3 years. DOHz was just one side branch...
For me, it gave the chance to grow and enjoy something I could never otherwise have landed in my short season! ..ditto for the PR, which is on it's way to full auto -
