Is the heat mat the problem? I have a bunch of them and they all have hot spots. I usually have to put some sweatshirts on top of them to keep them from cooking my mushrooms. Can have spots that are 80 and spots that are 95 inches from each other

I don't think so. I has started out putting the probe in the box with the seed but because it was basically floating, i dont think it was an acturate temp and it was cooking the seed. Now I put the probe between the mat and the case.

Don’t use a paper towel bro! Thats like the worst method for germinating a seed! Drop in liquid and float it for a day and then plant! Even if seed opens it tears up the root hairs opening paper towel in a way the naked eye can’t see!

Ehhh, it's worked fine so far. I used to direct plant but the tent get cold so it stunts them.
