If you are at all comfortable with stuff on your own, installing minisplits is super duper easy. You just need a vacuum pump and an R410 gauge kit.

you can get 110v units.

All you do is run the copper lines between them, just have to do a flare, just like with plumbing. Pull a vacuum, verify vacuum, release the charge and turn the unit on. The 9000 BTU one in my office was like $700.
I've been wanting to put one of those in my garage for a while

We got estimates for that today but they want to do it ducted instead of wall mounted. Comes with a 12 year warranty on parts and labor with them too. That was actually the contract I was gonna sign before i figured I'd ask around here

In an old house, ducted just doesn't make sense to me, unless its spectacularly easy to run ducting for some reason.

My house was built in the 1920s, and there was no way to get enough return air from the 2nd story. My upstairs was always hot until I installed a separate mini split for upstairs.

I'm not sure where you are in the country, but unless you are above zone 5 or so, I would be fine with good heat pumps, anymore they are good to -20.

Its really easy. I've installed both a Senville and a Pioneer. Both are made by Midea. Unless you buy a mitsu or other name brand unit, you are buying a Midea or Gree rebrand. But no big deal, both are good units. I've had both for over 5 years now with no problems. And as cheap as they are, I can afford to replace them 4 times over compared to what an HVAC guy wants to install a mistubishi unit.

We were really looking to put in AC since the house is 1820s and we're still on window ACs. These guys want to all basically put a heat pump in with a handler in the attic and in the basement. The main selling point is basically the heat functionality since we have an old combi boiler and radiators that's oil which is crazy expensive to run. They say we can run cool and hot with this system and it's 100% efficient at 5 degrees outside and will run until -25. That would allow us to basically just run the oil for hot water and the couple nights a year we get below 0. Heat pump system is basically about $15k cheaper then separate central air and new furnace install
Do any of them bother asking about your insulation?.....the system you had was VERY cost effective at the time it was relevant seeing as oil cost was so low. No worries about heat or cooling loss from sub standard insulation to the outside. Now a days it's a big factor to consider in older homes ( pre 60's) in a house that old....well, it needs to be considered...here inb Fla heat pumps are the norm. but for older homes ( many built with NO insulation) the summer months means it runs...constantly..so any savings it might have from efficiency are lost. But mosr companies won't bother telling the home owner that tidbit of info, they just sell them based on the spec sheet they are given.
