My clothes could stand up after a watch,,,,,,,especially the 12hr watches. Then you had to do maintenance after your watch.
6 on and 6 off was actually less sleep. The very most sleep you could get is about 5 1/2 hours at a time. Like 12/12, you still had work to do after watch and ta still had to eat and shower in that off time. Pretty damn grueling work.
You had to be fully aware of how the plant was running. Other than the amphib 600psi plant, all the other ships were 1200psi superheated steam plants. VERY dangerous. Main steam leaks were rare. You can't pinpoint them because it's so loud. You search for them with a broom handle. You can't see the steam for many feet from the leak, before it can cool enough to condense some. Ya used brooms to search, because superheated steam at that pressure would cut, seal and cauterize whatever body part it would come into contact. You wouldn't feel it........for a few seconds.......... as your finger, hand or arm fell to the deck.
A small equalizer line between two boilers developed a leak. It was only a 3/4 inch line. The leak quickly expanded as it CUT thru the crack. It filled the entire space with superheated steam in 20 seconds of it being reported. Only one guy got out, as he was next to an escape trunk. He still got light steam burns.
The plant was quickly secured by personnel outside the space by remotely operated valves and luckily the plants were bot cross connected.
Even though the plant was secured, there was still all the steam in the drum. Ventilation took time and temp did rise quite a lot in that time. I was one of the guys that did the recovery of the bodies. Not my first, nor my last time seeing human carnage, but I do have to say it was the most gruesome. You don't want to know what it looked like. Sure fucked me up for a couple months! At least now, there has to be some trigger of some sort. If I get burned or see a car overheat, the images of my friends come back very strongly.
