Not sure why...but my camera cuts off the heads of all the anglers in the shots...its a mystery! :D

I took him and my grandpa (both Tom's lol) summer steelhead fishing here... 45.575654, -123.560967 They didn't believe I had already caught forty or so that summer with size 16 all black bead-head nymphs on 4lb strength magna thin leader under little cork floats and no weight otherwise. We hooked like 15 that day. Many days when I had my drift boat still where I hooked ten or more winter steelhead just floating the river looking for rocks and otters and eagles more than anything in particular.

Its cool...here you are half way around the continent from me fishing the same species as me using a very different technique and slamming them!! Here we sight fish in shallow water and use spinning gear with mepps [HASHTAG]#2[/HASHTAG] or [HASHTAG]#3[/HASHTAG]. Its closer to hunting them than fishing! Nice clear 2-3 feet deep water. Man is it intense when a 10 pounder bull dog charges your spinner!! Its all about controlled casting and reading the current.

I watched a lot of videos and read as much as possible about fishing as a child. You are like me, we could just catch fish wherever cause we can read the water. When the river is up in the winter I fish a sand shrimp on a [HASHTAG]#1[/HASHTAG] gamakatsu octopus hook always barbless (and I lose way less fish than most people so I'm a firm believe the barb is worse as it creates a leverage point). Anyway, 36-42" leader and make your "slinkier" weight longer than needed so there is room for a couple extra split shot in the top, that way it folds and flops and it slides over rocks and stuck, instead of being stiff like pencil lead a lot of folks use. I think of little things that most wouldn't care about. And how many fish do you hook when you aren't paying attention? A bunch I bet...

Oh for sure bud...its the small details that make you kick ass!! Lots of fish hooked when deep water fishing for walleye or smallmouth, but none while sight fishing the rivers for rainbows...they are so big and the water is so clear you literally look for the fish before you bother casting. Spot a fish, stealth sneak upstream, make a perfect cast or two(or ten on a stubborn fish), hang the spinner in the current in front of it, and its game on!!! Mess up a single cast by landing it directly over the fish and you lose. Its super intense fishing.

We throw spinners in a spot where 30-50lb chinook frequently chase them to the bank and slash only to miss, its quite the show. Most people miss it cause they don't have on polarized shades.

Polarized glasses are an absolute must! Super important when fishing big pike and musky as well.
