I have yet to have a transplanted plant complain noticeably, but the one time I planted direct, the babe was so bloody slow that I almost gave up on it. In large pots, the least I will do is get the babe started with a few days in a peat plug. Usually babes in plugs go into a transplant cup that permits removal of the bottom before placing in a fitted hole, and removal of the sides after placement in the hole. No root ball falling apart is possible. Solo cups work fine for this, and will be my go to from now on.
Cocoforcannabis recommends seedling fabric pots between peat plug and final pot, but I have not tried that, and it may in any case not be that good an idea with autos on a tight time limit. At this point, I expect my standard process will be to plant seed in peat plug after tap emergence, then into a solo transplant cup until signs of roots emerging from bottom, then into the final pot. Unless, of course, the solo is the final pot - my current solo mischief seems like lots of fun so far, and there seems to usually be room for a few solos in the 'drobe.
Good luck with it, there are lots of ways to do the deed well, just find one that you like, and stick with it. There will always be the odd unhappy seedling no matter what, so don't sweat it when one goes sideways.
