Indoor In too deep.. Whatsgoodie's massive autoflower grow [JOURNAL, ROOM CONSTRUCTION -> GROW]

Started the germination process last night. I'm germinating in the Jiffy seedstarter kit. Which is the mini greenhouse with peat pellets in it. I started the process on 22 seeds last night and placed the container in a dim room where the heat is set to 80 degrees. (Ambient temp right now is 79). The jiffy container is not 100% air tight, on one edge it bends in and air can get in/out. Will this cause a problem? As well, I smelled the air coming from this little spot and I noticed it's a bit of a musky/dirt smell - is this just the peat pellets?

Thanks all!

Rest of my equipment will be here tomorrow and I'll be posting pictures of the grow room!!!

Just my :2cents:, but in my opinion you shouldn't even have thought about germinating until your room was complete and running for at least a week to monitor temps/RH, find light leaks, etc. It's easier to take care of any problems you may find with the room with no plants in it. Set up sounds good though. Good luck.

Jiffy pellets can be a pain if you have them too wet, will cause the seed/tap root to rot if not careful.
When I use Jiffy pellets I soak them till fully expanded then squeeze out as much of the water as I can without mangling the pellet, even with that I cannot have the pellets covered or they cause the problems mentioned. And I have even had some grow mold, was my first go with Jiffy pellets and they were soaking wet in an enclosed container.....lucky it was just some crappy bagseed.

Hey Zx,

I appreciate the comment! The room is a closet and is 100% light proofed, I already have my ballasts and bulbs (400W HPS/600W HPS and 8x 26W CFLS). The room is light proofed and with just those items running the temps got to about ~85 after 5 hours of the light being on.

The pieces of equipment I'm waiting for are FF LW to mix with my FF OF and the flange to connect my CAN FAN 6. With the CAN FAN 6 on, I'm more than confident my temps will drop AT LEAST 6 degrees.

I'm confident I was in a good position to begin germination as the products I mentioned are due tomorrow and germination can take between 24 hours to a week. :)

I made sure not to get them too wet at all, they were 'lightly' moist and I've had to actually mist them twice due to them being 'almost dry' since I've done the germination - I figured in this phase less was better. My temps in the room I'm germinating in now are about 86.. I turned the heater down a bit. Do you recommend taking the cover off of the Jiffy greenhouse? There's no condensation on the top of the hood at all.

Thanks as usual for the participation and help! I promise pics tomorrow. :D

2 Mi5's have sprouted and one Thunder Bloody Mary. The tap root is pushing down and the seeds are coming above soil! Building excitement for me here.. UPS said my package with my LW and flange will be here by 3:30... so another 1.5 hrs to go and then I'll have some grow room pics. ;)

So I've never germinated in Jiffy pellets before (I practiced germinating in paper towel on bag seed 10+ times)... here's some shots, someone tell me I'm just freaking out but things don't look right.

These ones are droopy and curling? Is the tap root exposed or is that a stem? Why are they droopy and curling? Should I cover them with more soil?

IMG_3584.jpg

This one is ideal, no? it looks perfect to me. Still has the seed shell but it's growing UP.

IMG_3585.jpg

This one is growing towards the side, towards the netting of the jiffy pellet, is it not?

IMG_3586.jpg

Again, growing curly and awkwards instead of straight up -- why!?

I'm considering dropping these jiffy pellets in the final destination (haha) of 50% LW/50% OF and covering them with a 1/8" layer of LW on top to see if they fix themselves... does this seem reasonable? or am I just overreacting?

No... youre righton... something is wrong there... i suspect its all the peat in the jiffy pots... peat carries ph low very fast... drop the jiffy pots and germ in paper towels from now on... then transplant to a very low nutrient mix... then bring in nutes at 7 - 14 days from germ ... my :2cents:

Is there any chance of saving them? I have 22 seeds in this mess... >.> I'm scared now!

I would, I quit jiffy pellets, held too much water and not enough O2, some seeds and roots started rotting before I could get them above to light. Not just one single strain huh? That's ridiculous. I'd say pot them or get them into where they are going to be (couldn't remember if you are going to hydro) and push some soil or media around those stringy things to help support their push upwards and outwards to the light. Looks like you are growing vines, not cannabis. crazy.

maybe try keep the seed pods misted and soft so the leaves and push out of em, I've seen some overdry once out the the plant can't push out of the seed.

I do like the jiffy seed starting soil mix though. It works nicely, esp in combo with their peat pots.

I'd say you could def. save them. They are still alive. Personally, i would get everything (Jiffy tabs and soil moist) nice and wet with my pots that I'm going to on standby and carefully break/ cut open the jiffy tab and then take out the small plant and CAREFULLY place into it's new home with the heads poking out and easily move the media to surround exposed root and some of that stringy/vine stalk it made.

Your water is ph'd right?
