Indoor Heaters

Something else to think about, off hours. You have to be able to supply heat during lights off, so again it comes back to either heating the whole room and drawing air from the room, or putting a space heater in the tent.

Also, if you go with HPS you've also got to think about all that heat in the summer. You'll either need to vent it outdoors or let the A/C cool it. You would need a dual system where you could draw and vent indoors in the winter and outdoors in the summer. That's why I think LEDs or T5s might be better. You'll get some ambient heat from the lights and will have to supplement heat in the winter, but you've got to supplement heat anyway for lights out. But you won't have to cool as much in the summer.

Just Google Mini Split Heat Pump and you'll get plenty of hits. Most of the 9,000 BTU units are 110 v. You don't get into 220 till the bigger units. Do you know how many amps you've got out there? Did you having any trouble with the window a/c tripping the circuit?

@Muddy yeah I need to do some more research on those. I don't know jack about them or if they can work. There is only 1 220 plug in the home and it's in the living room.

If I went with HPS it would have to be on 24/7 to have no other heat source, a d I wouldnt use it in the summer anyway.

The mobile home is running off a 60 amp breaker from the house. No trouble with anything tripping it.

LOL, if I can ever convince the Mrs. to let me put up that 10 x 14' grow shed I'd put a mini split on it. I haven't brought it up in awhile but should. The chopper incident might give me a little leverage. :D

good call muddy

also... an air intake preheater would work...

could be as simple as running exhaust duct through a drum or tub with water in it... as long as the water can keep absorbing heat from the growroom it would help keep a constant inlettemp

Ya, that's plenty. Those units are pretty efficient. I bet it wouldn't cost a whole lot to run it year round. You should look at what it would cost to run one of those compared to running the HPS 24/7.

I did go to the power consumption calculator and figured I could run a 1000w 24/7 for a month for $57 at 8 cent 60 something at 9 cents. It would be hard to figure something thats off and on unless it was hooked to a watt meter. That would be 700w for lights and whatever the amount the mini split uses.

Look around, you should be able to find some figures based on the average ambient temperatures for our area. That should give you an average. I'm about to say good night but I'll try and remember to look in the morning. I remember seeing some somewhere. If you run LEDs and T5s, how many watts would you draw? If we add that to the mini split I'm thinking it's going to be less than 700 watts.

Those 2 lights together pull 700w. Plus the mini would go way over 1000w. If I could run my whole grow on 1k HPS for the winter months. Using it for light and heat. It's still in the air so many choices! Thanks to everyone for your input so far and keep the ideas coming.I still have a while before I need a final decision but I wanted to get started looking for something.

Still been thinking about this, I don't really wanna put so much money into this as far as getting a 1000w HPS system and mini split. I wanna keep cost down because I'm not sure if I will be growing at this location next winter. I have been Googling space heaters and oil filled radiant heaters are poping up alot. Does any one have any experience with these type of heaters? Was looking at something like this one below. It's digital just set the temp and and forget it.

I use one of those in the master bathroom. It's at the back corner of the house and the coldest room in the house. They take a little while to heat up but once they do they provide steady, constant heat. They are also more efficient than the type with just a heating element. If I remember correctly, your room is pretty big. Have you thought about partitioning off the grow area so you're heating a smaller area?
