Grow your own in the outdoor heat, maybe Australia!!

Having Waira and Weed Warrior Maria and hecno all contributing to this thread is awesome, certainly brings a LOT of experience to the one place! I have a feeling this thread may end up quite long:rofl:. But that's ok I certainly wish I could have found a lot of relative information about our specific climate challenges in one spot when I first started out. I have a feeling me and you are going to be Guinea pigs of sorts this year mate:haha:.

Yeah, sorry, I was offline most of the last day and I come back to some DEEP reading! Just finished catching up and I think I am catching on. But I’ll say this.....I’m damn glad there are more seeds in those packs than I need!!! Lol! That way, if I screw up at first, I can start again! I’m going to be curious what the DP and SS reps have to say about the strains (I think “chemovar” is the correct term - will it ever catch on?) I chose from them. I think I’ll message both of them and I’ll certainly post any reply. Thanks to my friend @Weed Warrior for that suggestion!

Sure is great that @Waira joined in our “chatty” thread! :crying: He always brings the knowledge with his posts.
Yeah thats a pretty short one!! I'd be VERY interested to see how photo varieties like I grow respond in an increasing light regime of such a short duration
Now I finally have a grasp on how photos work a little better, towards the end of this year I will try some photos you have had success with and find out....although I will probably grow them in pots to keep their size down as realistically I don't need that much herb from 1 plant! The discussion we have been having about photos in here and shorter days also has me very intrigued :smoking:

I think you’re right, brother! I’ll be watching you finish and then you’ll be watching me start. Lol. Don’t you have something growing now?

I received a reply to a private message I sent the DP rep and it, frankly, leaves me pretty confused. I’ll post it below but the rep recommended Frisian Dew which their website promotes as a great strain for “extremely cold climates.”

“Hi tread!, and thanks for the mail. I may not have the time to delve into the thread, but of course I would love to help and advise.
Honestly i would recommend Frisian Dew.

Here is a bit more info from an Australian polytunnel grower. Its from an old blog which is no longer on our website.

The following words come from this weeks grower, Aussie Alex.
“This strain is by far the best for my style of growing. I veg indoors under led lights finishing them outdoors in my green house. Frisian Dew grows fast and finishes fast. It has good mold resistance and great bag appeal most of the bud are quite dense. And half the plants will turn purple without a cold snap.”
Aussie Alex explained why he likes Frisian Dew.
“With my style of growing I can put them out in October and finish In December that's getting to the longest days of the year and they still keep flowering and finishing with rock hard buds. No other strain I've used can do this. They are almost like an auto, keep in mind I live in Australia, our days are not as long as Europe. But other strains revert back to vegetive growth outdoors, so Frisian Dew is the best strain I have ever grown. Another reason I grow Frisian Dew is the resistance to extreme weather. These plants were put out in the last month of winter and had frost in the night, whilst day time temps reached an unusually hot 30ºC - this happened for 2 weeks. Before I finished them we had 40 degrees Celsius heat for a whole week which did not affect them at all.
Last year in spring we also had 40 degrees heat for 1 month and the Frisian Dew’s finished with rock hard buds. Another reason for loving the strain the seeds are great value for money. I always get 100% germination rate.”
Aussie Alex explains why he grows Frisian Dew under white mesh netting
“I grow under the netting to give some protection from the insects it works really well. Also the sun in the summer is so strong, the mesh gives 30% shade this helps to keep them happy. And the last reason for the white mesh is security, you can't see any thing inside from 50 meters away. If other growers try this strain they won't regret it, it’s easy to grow and has heavy harvests. These plant gets so heavy it needs support, its essential”

Aussie Alex explains more about his Frisian Dew greenhouse grow.
“I grew 25 plants and made 40 pounds (18 Kg) of dry product - beautiful nugs. I veg them for 9 weeks indoors then finish them in my green house right on 7weeks nice and fast. I grow only in coco its the only way for me. I used Dutch Fest coco nutrients and cal-mag (Calcium & Magnesium supplement) and a PK booster. That's it for the good results. I use the insulation around the pots to protect them from the frosty mornings in the winter and to protect the black plant containers from getting too hot in the sun.”

I’m SO CONFUSED! So, this guy is vegging indoors (I’m assuming under a LONG day cycle like, say, 20/4) and then putting them out to flower as the hottest part of the year approaches; using the shorter natural day cycle outside to flip them into flower? That about right? And, in spite of the still increasing length of day they remain in flower and finish nicely? Why not just grow an auto, then?

I’m still waiting on their thoughts on using Durban Poison and Lemon Zkittle in a more traditional way. If/when I hear back on that I’ll post it. I have to admit, I was a little disappointed in the lack of information in the reply. Not surprised, but disappointed.
I have reached out to SO many breeders over the past year with specific grow-related questions and requests for recommendations to overcome our particular challenges. I consider myself honored if I even GET a reply as most of them don’t bother; but I’ve yet to have a single top-tier breeder reply with anything that resembled useful information. Lol! I’ve even asked those that DID reply about strains I KNEW wouldn’t work and would often get a generic “that’s a great strain!” Lol! The forums are more useful - actual grower knowledge. In fairness, I think the folks answering emails aren’t really the breeder/grower and are more like customer service reps who really don’t have the necessary knowledge, personally, to answer in depth. They probably get too many questions to bother to delve into researching a more obscure topic like this. The breeders are probably to busy with, well, “breeding” to be bothered by us growers. Lol! Sure would be nice if these companies would put out DETAILED growing information on their chemovars - IF they even have them. :/
:shooty:

I wont bullshit you man...the vast majority of breeders do not know how their strains would perform in southern climates. In fact....you would be amazed how many breeders have no clue how their strains will do outdoors period.

I received the same message from tony and was also rather surprised. To be straight with you guys i wouldnt grow out the frisian dew...ive grown it several times and out of all the DP gear i have grown(which is lots!!) i liked it the least. Its okay as a commercial strain, but taste and potency were not the best. Just my 2 cents!

What a relief. I was afraid I might get pounced on for my comment about breeders. I rewrote that about 4 times getting nicer and nicer each time. Kinda like making a negative comment about MegaCrop and worrying about getting hammered. Lol! Glad I’m not the only one.

Kinda makes me wonder how much science is actually in most of this breeding and how much is ‘slap a couple phenos you have on hand together, take some pretty pics and hit social media with a description you came up with during a smoke session.’ Win a cup with it at a contest that’s only really available to club members and is judged by club officianados and BOOM, you’re a success. Lol! People bash forums for having misinformation but at least there’s SOME information.

ONE breeder I have used that is as good as you could ever expect at communication, and who tells you what he knows and what he DOESN’T know, is New420Guy. I haven’t run any of his seeds the last 2 cycles because I was going for all ‘top tier genetics;’ but I think I will be heading back that way soon. They grew as well or better than any $16 seeds I’ve been getting from companies that don’t bother to reply to email. Support the small guy and seeds are $4-$6USD! Photos and autos. [HASHTAG]#disgusted[/HASHTAG] [HASHTAG]#annoyed[/HASHTAG]

Hey bud.....you are absolutely entitled to you own opinion around here!! If you weren't "allowed" to voice your opinion on nutes or seed breeders or strains, I would simply not be here. Sure folks are going to disagree, but everybody should be able to say their piece!!(as long as its done in a respectful manor of course)

LOL....no comment :D I would guess for many breeders that is spot on.

Hey grow what you like man!! If newguy420 is putting out quality at a cheaper price absolutely go for it!! I stick with the big boys(DP, Dina, Sweet, Delicious) because i have had tremendous success growing their gear. Please link to newguy420 (or PM me if its another weed forum site)

I always have something growing :haha:. Mostly seedlings again at the moment though....I have Dutch passion auto glueberry, HPG O.A x B.Tx BBG, Mephisto S.O.D.K, Mephisto Fugue state x orange diesel, Royal queen seeds euphoria(photo) and a dragon. With some H.S.O photos on their way should be here soon! With a lot more strains also in the plan this year!!

So they basically told you that they have NFI on what's going to work for you  I'm not really surprised at this, well a little bit surprised it came from DP I thought you may have gotten a better response from them. Even looking at breeders web sites, sometimes leads me to think most have never grown their gear outside of a controlled environment! Some of their claims are outright ridiculous and very misleading eg some will claim that their strains will yield double outdoors compared with indoors , yeah right :nono:. I don't even look at breeders sites anymore as I find most are utter bullshit with their outdoor claims.

Sorry man, I wrote the above post nearly saying the same thing as you without reading this first lol I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking MOST breeders have no idea about how their strains perform outdoors!! I love your no BS attitude by the way mate. An honest opinion is hard to get sometimes....not with you

you'll never get hammered by me from giving honest feedback about something mate!! I hate when something doesn't work as claimed and people don't speak up. You won't hear me tell you something is ok if it doesn't work for me, negative feedback is just as important as positive feedback imo. I would rather be removed from any forum than give a dishonest opinion on something! The only information I usually believe from the internet comes from AFN. I am starting to look more at the smaller guys also, at least most of them have a fair idea about how their strains perform.

Just a little follow up on this....with Dp its the southern climate that i think is what is making it difficult for them. Ask dptony which strains will do well in a northern climate and he has a ton of sound advice to give. For some breeders, i do believe their outdoor claims and DP is one of them. I have personally out yielded their strain weights using every strain(photos) i have grown from their catalog. Some of the listed weights i have doubled.

I'm not the only one thinking MOST breeders have no idea about how their strains perform outdoors!!

Many breeders will know how their strains will do in their microclimate outdoors....but ask about extremely varied conditions, like long or short daylight hours(northern versus close to the equator grows) and its a very different question!!

How many breeders would use a controlled artificially decreasing light regime to know the hours of darkness it takes to initiate preflower? My guess? None! LOL (okay....maybe very, very few)
