Indoor Grow one with FD

I really dont. You leave a 16 oz. cup with the bottom cut out on for the life of the plant? Just because its an Auto. But all the roots in the cup cant get out and it severely limits the root ball. I have never limited a root ball , mine go from paper towel to Jiffy plug to 4 oz cup to 3 gal pot.

The tiered method works just fine. The root ball isn't severely limited and there are plenty of examples where this method produces higher yields than germing directly to the same sized pot. Autos seem to prefer root systems that are taller rather than wider. But there are many ways to grow and if you've got something that already works then go with it. But this is FD's thread and he's a master of growing this way, and the whole point is for others to see how well it works by trying it themselves.

Not trying to interfere with FD. I appreciate what he is doing. Good idea

Just trying to understand. The tiered method you say in the beginning, I cant find that anyplace but here. I guess I have no understanding of autos and dont know where to start reading to go along with my current efforts to bring up 3 plants.

No worries. Check out FullDuplex's Guide for all the details: http://www.autoflower.org/f5/fds-guide-growing-hefty-autos-small-places-206.html. He explains the tiered planting method and all the other aspects of his grow technique. Of course there are lots of other expert growers here who do things differently. Once cool thing about AFN is that you can pick and choose from the different methods to suit your particular growing conditions. I personally like tiering into small pots since space is an issue for me. Others have the space and lighting to grow everything in 5 gallon pots, and you can get great results that way also.

worked great for me! only problem i had was not severing the tap root while taking off the lower cup peice, the ones i didnt stunt by doing that are doing great!

What lower piece? I thought there was an outer and inner cup.

You almost severed the root? Dont sound easy.

That's the new technique, the old one was to cut the bottom of the cup off

I'll explain..

Old technique is to make drainage holes at the bottom of the cup, and fill with medium, then cut the bottom off when it's time to transplant.

New technique is to use two cups, cut the bottom off one, and put it in the second cup, the second cup has to have drainage holes at the bottom, when it's time to transplant, just take the inside cup out and place it about a 1/3rd into the destination pot.

Well that makes perfect sense, isolating completely, starting cup from final dirt. More ladies more better. Could not get jiffy seed start mix, "we only carry that in the spring", only thing I could find was Burpee. Everything else had some kind of fertilizer or compost. Burpee is coconut coif, with nothing added. Closest thing I could find short of mixing vermiculite and perlite myself. LOL FD, I would like your opinion, use what I've got or get jiffy online?

ok as promised here are the pics of the cups
Ive been over this with several others members of the thread, some with a disdainful tone implying that I should not interfere with the words of the Chosen One and should learn to genuflect in his divine presence. I am not trying to remove anyone from their throne, I just want to know why the roots are prevented from growing in the 1st 6 inches or so, by using a 16 oz cup inverted with the bottom of the cup cut out.

When I do it, after popping in a paper towel and germing in plugs, they are placed in their 1st home in a 4 in. Jiffy pot. When transplanting, I remove that Jiffy pot even though I dont have to because I wouldnt want to stress the root and rootlet by finding their way through the cup. But there is no way rootlets could eat through plastic. So they are contained and killed by the cup.

Sorry. I just dont understand whats going on.

I assume you're talking about me which really ticks me off since I took the time to try and help you and post links that would give you more info. I never said that FD's method is the only way to grow, because obviously it isn't. But it's the only way to grow in this thread. If it doesn't make sense to you and you don't like the idea, don't participate! I personally hate Jiffy Cups and would never use them. Lots of people feel the same way. But I wouldn't come to your thread and keep crapping on your method if you had good results. I sent you a link to FD's guide which has more details about all this - did you read it before asking the same question for the 3rd time?

I really don't understand why you've got an attitude anyway. Several of us welcomed you and tried to help out in the first thread you started, and you never gave a word of thanks or even acknowledged that we were there. You've continued asking questions and various members have tried to give you answers, and you don't seem to appreciate it at all. Maybe you should spend some time trying to be part of the community rather than just demanding answers like we're your employees or something.
