Indoor Grow#2 Mephisto Chemdogging by Greenjeans:DWC/SCROG/CFL

Well, it is day 8, and things are already going more smoothly than the first grow. Roots hit the water yesterday, and Lilith is looking healthy. The other seed didn't make it, as expected. I removed her rockwool cube and topped up the hydroton. I'll update with a pic soon.

Seedlings seem to have a hard time breaking free of the rockwool for me. It was the same thing on the first grow. I think next time I am going to leave the hole in the rockwool open and just sprinkle it full of yard dirt for the seedling to push up through.

I too find rockwool to be a pain in the ass. so I built a clone box I used a 1 gallon tote but a 2 gallon pail or almost any container would work, hell, I made on in a mayonnaise jar!. I cut the basket off of a 2" netpot. I use a neoprene insert in the basket collar. I let me seedlings get as long a tap root as I dare in the paper towel, usually 1" to1 1/2". Now the neoprene inserts are too thick so I slice them in half horizontally. I gently slip the seedling into the slit in the insert. I leave them in the clonebox till they have 6-8" if root them move them to the bucket,. I just thread the root thru an opening in the larger netpot until the leave are almost flush with the rim of the pot, them carefully fill the pot with the clay pebbles.. Fill the bucket to just below the net pot until the root get 10-12 inches long then lower the water level to an inch or so below the net pot. I've done this with at least 20 seedlings and have never lost or stunted one. Its a better way to start plants for DWC IMO.

I thought about doing them in a seedling box of some kind, but I really do want to start them in their final home. The way I am doing it seems to work well, I just need to give them a little help breaking ground.

Day 10:

No nutrients yet. I will probably change the res. later this week and start at 1/8 strength.

Lilith is healthy. Her roots hit the water on day 6. They have since extended and are already throwing off a bunch of secondary growth.

I am currently running 4 of the 8 cfls in my setup on her. I plan to move to LEDs by the time she is flowering. I will have to modify my cabinet to give me another 18-24 inches in height. I will post a full update of the upgrade here..

Here she is.. Nowhere to go but up from here..

Day 14:

Lilith has really grown in the last 4 days.. Unfortunately, she has developed a deformity. I am sure it has nothing to do with anything I have done, so all I can do is let it ride, and see what she does going forward. I'm not sure if this is a genetic problem, or just a random mutation. Here is a pic of the deformity. I had hoped it would just be the one leaf, but it looks like the new set is also showing the deformity..

Here are a couple more shots of her..

I gave her her first taste of nutes today at 1/4 strength. Her roots have already really taken off!! I thought I would go ahead and show what nutrients I am using. I am using the Humboldt Nutrients three part system, and Earth Juice's Cal/Mag product. Bluelab's PH meter calibration solutions, and GH PH down. I am still not using a ppm meter. I will order one if I determine that I need it. I know, everyone will say that it is a necessity, but I haven't found that to be so on my first grow. I simply look to the leaves to tel me what is happening. If I think the water is too hot, I adjust down, and add plain ph water to the res to lower the concentration. If that stops being effective then I will alter my strategy accordingly.

I like the Humboldt nutes because they seem to be available for a low price, and I have read that the people who use them have had success. I haven't gotten any of the other additives, but I do plan to.

I also like their interactive feeding chart. You can enter the amount of water into the field and it will adjust the amounts for you. I typically mix 4 gallons at a time, and am able to cut the strength simply by entering the number I want into the water field. For instance, if I want 1/4 strength, I just tell the chart that I am mixing 1 gallon, and put that amount into my 4 gallons of water. Here is what the chart looks like.

Okay, that's all for now. I will update in a week, or if anything spectacular(or horrible) happens.

Well, I just ordered my LEDs. I got 2 300w(5w chips) Mars Hydro panels. I almost got the Mars II 400w, but it was more expensive, and 200w less, so I went with what I considered to be the better deal. I like the idea of being able to have two panels that I can adjust separately, anyway.

Also, I am having a Calcium issue that I am sure now is due to PH swing. I was having the problem on my last grow, too. I am having a really hard time keeping the PH stable, so I have decided to make a drastic Nutrient change to try and get more stability.

To that end, I ordered the GH Flora Duo 2 part system, along with floralicious plus, Liquid Kool Bloom, and Flora Nectar Sugar Cane. These are supposed to be ph buffered, so I am REALLY hoping they help with the PH swings.

Spent some time on my new cab design for the upgrade. I need to add more height to accommodate the LEDs, and have had the Idea for a third chamber since noticing how cool the bottom of the cab stayed once the scrog filled in and shaded the lower third of it. Here is the new design. I will be adding the lower chamber in the next couple of weeks.

Looks like a good plan, gj :)
I just popped a pair of Chemdogging, too! Looks like I'm a couple weeks behind you...
Looking forward to sharing the strain grow, Bro!
:pass::cheers:
