Woo.. Didn't mean to start a full scale riot, Gotham fans are on a war path. Just wanted to offer my opinion, I have been buying products from china for years and appreciate not having to deal with a middle man, while I haven't used that company specifically, I intend to outsource my next light purchase.

And granted I have not worked with Gotham Hydro personally as of yet.

My poor experience with American LED vendors goes as follows. Purchased 100w Blackstar from blackstarled.com, account got charged to pcgrowbox.com, both supposedly based out of CA, when it arrived it shipped from lighthousehydro.com, all three locations sell the same light for different prices, although the same company, and it still took over a month to recieve, and customer service was poor at best, it was always on the way, or I should have received this invoice, or tracking number was wrong. The whole experience left a sour taste in my mouth, it did eventually arrive, and I like the light, but not worth the hassle. Never had a legitimate Chinese manufacturer waste my time like that.

From what I have read Gotham Hydro is a sister company to Lighthouse hydro of whom are only "official distributors" further more these companies get their authentic blackstars from, you guessed it, china:

Lighthouse Shangkong LTD.
NO. 105 China South International
Materials City, Pinghu, ShenZhen
CHINA

I just wanted everyone to know what they are really buying, and cut out the deceptive advertising, they aren't made in America, they are good lights, but why pay a bloated American price for the sake of convenience, even with the highest quality components these lights cost the manufacturers a miniscule fraction of their retail price. Those light contain no rare materials, a 100w blackstar consists of about $15 worth of parts when purchased wholesale a 500w maybe $60 worth of parts. Sure factor in assembly, taxes and customs, and you have a somewhat inflated price. Still the stateside distributors need to make money so the price continues to go up and up, and as long as everyone is none the wiser they can still make hundreds of dollars off these lights, simply for reshipping a product.

If one breaks, and they ship you a new one free of charge its because they have 500 of them sitting in a warehouse that they bought for next to nothing, and they have already made enough money off you to cover the cost of replacement without flinching under the guise of quality customer service. I just refuse to fall for it.

I can see the towns folk gathering with pitchforks and torches, to oust my Frankenstein-ish beliefs from their countryside but please don't hate me. Just trying to save everyone a bit of money, sure sometimes its a gamble, sometimes its better to be safe than sorry, I just want to show you my hand of cards and increase your odds of success.

Now hold on there joker, no one's attacking you. Gotham is just a company many of us have had great experiences with so we're going to defend them. Now, as far as dealing with pcgrowbox.com, they're the fucking scum of the earth. A few years back when I first started growing I bought one of their little cabs for a few hundred as I had NO CLUE about pot or lighting or anything. What they sent me was cheap crumbly pine board literally held together with hot glue. It was broken into pieces when I got it and there were leaks all around. They advertised carbon filters and ona included in the kit but when it got there it was all cheap knockoff brands that don't do anything. The only way I got my money back was by threatening to post videos and pictures of their shitty product all over the different forums, I still seriously regret not doing that, but they had my personal info and any scum bag company that operates like that probably wouldn't hesitate to call local LEO, saw it done with another LED distributor on ICMAG. I don't know why gotham would be in business with them except that they license out to local distributors. I'm so sorry if you had to deal with those slimy jerks.

As far as an led light not containing rare earth minerals or costing 15 dollars to make? I'm going to need links and other proof on that. Big claims need support. Gotham never once said they make the lights here, it plainly says on their web site that they are made in china and distributed here. I'd still rather deal with an American company, I've bought grow products from chinese companies before and I'm just not willing to deal with them again. Nothing against the chinese in general, just don't want the hassle from before.
I totally get that gotham has stacks of led units and pays very little from them, that's why I buy from them. Hassle free replacement from a company I can hold legally responsible for upholding a warranty. Thank you for letting us know about the company connections and your experience with them, it's always better to have more information.

Stay safe and harvest heavy:peace:

Understood completely Mr. Piggy. As you have said and as I have read Gotham has a good reputation, perhaps I will let my past experience with related companies slide, before I was more than convinced they were all connected, glad they are less so. I am not on a mission of attack either and I appreciate this exchange of dialogue.

Alright, lets break down a 100w Blackstar, considering these are made in bulk I will include bulk component prices, for the individual making a comparable light (only one) could get expensive.

50 X 2w Led = $0.10 (per led wholesale) X 50 = $5.00
1 X 100w Led driver = $1.00 (wholesale)
2 X 50w heat-sink = $2.99 (per sink wholesale) X 2 = $5.98
1 X Fan = $2 (per fan wholesale)
1 case, cordage, and pcb ~ $3

That comes out to $16.98 and still those prices are only for wholesale in the hundreds of units, consider buying 1000's of those parts the price drops even more.

I get what you are saying though, the ease of a backed American company is comforting, many things myself I would rather get locally than wait for shipping or using a company I could not verify as legitimate, several years ago Alibaba had a rash of fake companies punting worthless goods, it seems to have gotten better though.

Part listings:
Fan - http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/406181370/70X70X25mm_Great_Performance_Delta_12V_System.html
Sink - http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/558418387/high_power_50w_and_100w_led.html
Driver - http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/551339860/ac_dc_100w_led_driver.html?s=p
Led - http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/490092622/2w_led_diode.html

Case, cordage, and pcb too specific to find a comparable link however a bit of plastic and wire run next to nothing, even for the individual. And again these were just rough figures but I wanted to provide something to back up my claims, the price could sway up or down depending on the quantities the parts are purchased in.

Cheers folks, no harm no foul, thanks for changing my opinion that they are not all bad led light distributors out there.

Now as a side project I have been looking into custom building a 200w setup using 5w and 10w diodes, but the parts on those average out to what you would pay retail for an assembled unit, even seen a few 100w diodes now that would be a monster.

a 5w 10w 100w diode might be a true replacement for hps if you ever buld one get a guide up!

Hold the phone ive just seen 200w 300w 500w!

Will do agito, DIY is one of my favorite past times. I fondly remember rewiring my first rotary telephone as a child.

I won't hijack this thread with the details however, but expect to see something along those lines in early 2013, time and money willing. Likely using 10w diodes, at present it is difficult to find higher wattage diodes in any color other than white.

online they have reds listed 300w in red it would be a simple project if you used just 1 150w 200w or 300w lol (not that i know what im talking about)

You are right just spotted some colored 300w-ers 10,000 lumen a pop, with those high wattage models heat and power supply become more of an issue, think large chunks of aluminum, and cool tubes like with hps, and you would want a well over rated power supply to keep the internal components from exploding under load, all possible though. Another thought I have had would be led grow lights powered by solar cells (100w could be driven easily enough with one or two window sized cells), a nice reduction in carbon impact from indoor growing.

would be nice
The big issues is the leds is intial lumens as they drop in 1/2 every ft so penetration is very poor but id imagine a 100w-300w led will right alot of wrongs and with the extra par watts it will be the future of growing and give insane growth with a decent foot print.

Why is this tech not mainstream its cheap enough!

A word for the wise. All of these lights come from china, be it lighthouse hydro, gothem hydro, blackstarled, you name it they all come from one of a few manufacturers in china. Consider buying direct

Gothem Hydro 500w Blackstar retails for 'special' price $549.95

The same light can be bought direct from Shenzhen Jingchuangxin Electro-Optic Co., Ltd. for $320.00 with 3 year warranty and free shipping

Gothem Hydro 180w Blackstar retails for 'special' price $219.95

Shenzhen Jingchuangxin Electro-Optic Co., Ltd. 180w Blackstar $178.88 (116.00 + 62.88 shipping) again with 3 year warranty

I could go on for days but I can begin to feel my spine boil so I will save myself.
Shop around folks, those special prices are only special to the joker that's selling them.

A 3 year warranty does not really matter to me if I have to ship it back to China to be repaired/replaced. If you have a light go out mid grow good luck getting it replaced in less than a month or two.

I have to second Gotham. I've purchased several blackstars from them (running 2X500 in my flower tent and 1X240 in my veg) along with a tent and have received great customer service. Plus if you call them and order directly they will give a discount on ebay prices just say a friend told you about it. My second 500 watt blackstar arrived with a rattle (turns out they use an adhesive to bind some wires to the side of the case and it came loose) but I was overnighted a replacement for free.
