You may want to get some yucca if you don't already have it, it will help the water be able to actually hydrate your substrate as its a surfactant. General rule of thumb is that the roots typically span about as far as the above ground growth, so while you should be watering the whole pot, I wouldn't concentrate it too close to the plant itself.About 2-3 cups every two days.
I get runoff off of that amount, but the pot doesn't feel all that heavy before I water.
I’m thinking the soil is having a difficult time retaining the water.
