Indoor Frogster Autopot "Zamnesia" Grow

Day 63

I now have two Amnesia Haze plants drying/curing... the plant cut Monday is drying nicely and the other (the first plant harvested) is now starting her cure cycle of Jar/Burp).

The Drying tent has more bud now, Humidity sits at about 69% RH, so I have increased the airflow slightly to help with mould prevention.

Slow drying in the first 3 days, then the humidity will be reduced down by way of a dehumidifier.

I also have a very nice Auto Caramel to Harvest.... I may just leave her 1 more day.... she is on the edge, but I think she will take it, so/// Looking like a Friday Chop.

She smells absolutely divine, and very sticky... just opened the bud sites up again (bit more defoliation) for extra light penetration.

Here is a preview of her in my 4ft x 4ft x 6ft tent, she could have filled this easy by herself if I let her.

(under mixed 1000wt lights in the tent, so colour is a bit off)

Don't mis the Harvest Friday, I feel in my bones.... It's gonna be a good one.

She's amazing! You've done a great job with her!!

All things being Equal, I will be cutting the Caramel tomorrow.

Day 65

Today is the Day...... She has been pulled from the tent and will be trimmed later, I can't wait to see this one chopped and in the drying tent.

She looks and smells WONDERFUL, she stands just a tad under 5ft tall, and very full.

Back later, once she has been done.

Getting there..... she is a BIG Girl, 3 Hours trim just to get her to this point.

Buds are heavy.... more trim & back later with update pics etc...

I am slow drying in the first 3 days, the humidity will slowly be reduced down by way of a dehumidifier, finishing at about 40%.

Hey @Frogster first of all, splendid job. Great plants, great photos and very informative.

I do have one question in regards to the comment I quoted. Why do you reduce RH in the final stages of the drying process? This seems backwards to me.
We want to dry as slow as possible without the risk of mold, right? So, it would make more sense to me, to have the RH lower the first couple days, removing most of its water content. Then raising RH for the final phase before jarring, resulting in a slower dry.
Burping in jars is essentially slowing down the drying process for a better cure so, wouldn't it make sense to increase RH through every stage of the drying process?

I dry in paper bags. The first few days, I hang the bags. During the last few days, when it is almost there I put them in an enclosed space to ensure a higher RH.

Hey @Frogster... I do have one question in regards to the comment I quoted. Why do you reduce RH in the final stages of the drying process? ....

Hey @Yeatster,

My general answer for almost everything to do with Canna plants... In short... "There is more than one way to skin a cat".

Sometimes, I may seem to contradict traditional methods and "usual practice". However, it's not always because I think they are wrong, but more often to test if they are right... or if there is another way. I like to test things for myself, I learn from it, and hopefully become a better grower.

So, the basic thought/logic surrounding this was to... "Reduce the chance of mould, & utilise the remaining moisture in the plant, by letting the plant dry slowly, from the inside out".

I think a slower dry with good air circulation, lower temps & "managed" higher humidity in the first days is a beneficial, a lot of moisture is retained in the plant (stems, buds & leaves).

The plant may still require some of this remaining moisture... Who knows ? But my logic tells me... If we reduce the Humidity down low straight away, the resulting "Humidity Void" that we create, will start to draw moisture from the center of the plant out.

This can dry the outside too quickly, trapping moisture inside the ever tightening and shrinking bud/stem. That to me is a hazard, a potential problem, it increases the chance of mould developing at a later stage of dry or during cure.

If it is possible to control airflow, humidity, temp and the speed/time it takes to dry, then I want to do it that way... I start slow with a Higher Humidity (to balance the Humidity Void") and gradually reduce it down when I see the moisture is reducing....

I do check on them frequently, maybe 10 times a day, and have temp & humidity sensors logging the data to my PC in real time (good bit of kit & not expensive).... If you haven't got that time to devote, then it may be more risky.

But "closely managed" this way presents no problems, only advantages, as I said.... "Many ways to skin a cat"........ this one is mine.

Hope that helps.... :pass:

Thanks. I'll be curious to see if your final method after experimenting will be raising RH as drying progresses.

I know what you mean about buds drying on the outside, to fast. I usually jar very early to redistribute moisture from stem to outside of bud. Then back to the bag, repeat until no more than 70%, then start burping. My process takes a good 3 weeks from harvest to 62%.

Enjoy your skinned cat.

Peace

Day 67

The final Plant (from this grow) has been Harvested and trimmed, and is now in the tent drying.

Sorry I am a bit late getting this update done.... But it took me longer than I anticipated, to hand "rough trim" the whole plant in the pot. I stopped trimming her last night and finished her this morning.

I left a few colas with some bigger sugar leaves as an experiment for later - to see how the trimming machine handles very rough trimmed buds.

Here she is after the final rough trim (before stripping buds from stems)... I am rather proud of her, one of the nicest looking and balanced autos I have grown.

Once I had her at the stage in the photo above, the remaining process was very easy & quick.

Buds were snipped individually and separated into natural golf ball sized bits , leaving the stems in place as a living skeleton. I won't be doing it this way every harvest, way to long...

But I wanted to take a photo of the inner plant structure and how well the support cages/frames I used worked.

Those of you with a nervous disposition or easily offended.... look away now... She is naked!

Caramel plant1 022.jpg

As you can see the cage worked well, It helped shape the plant in growth and supported it in bloom.... How good is that !

All the bud was put through the bowl trimmer in batches, until it was trimmed to the level / shape I wanted.

I allowed the trimmer to do a slightly closer trim than before as the bud looks very frosty and I intend to use the trim from this Caramel plant to make "Canna Butter", so either way its Win / Win.

Look at the frost on the trim...

I haven't weighed it yet, but there is plenty of it and quality it is.... Look at the sticky trics on the side of the bowl..... Very nice... I will be administering decarboxylation for butter making tomorrow I think.

Caramel Bud Bowl Trim 2.jpg

The bud itself is very nice, sticky firm, dense, and smells of the sweetest fruity maybe even citrusy mixed notes.... The taste (licking sticky bud trimming fingers) is sweet... very nice, very moreish.

This, I think is going to be some "Megga Quality Bud", and not a bad haul..... Well done Zamnesia......

Yep, that is 860 Grams .... or, in my money 30.33 ounces. Either way, that's a record for me. Close wet trimmed weight. I shall report back with final dry weights of all plants later.

I am a very happy bunny..... I have to shout these peeps here....
