Hey
@Frogster... I do have one question in regards to the comment I quoted. Why do you reduce RH in the final stages of the drying process? ....
Hey
@Yeatster,
My general answer for almost everything to do with Canna plants... In short... "There is more than one way to skin a cat".
Sometimes, I may seem to contradict traditional methods and "usual practice". However, it's not always because I think they are wrong, but more often to test if they are right... or if there is another way. I like to test things for myself, I learn from it, and hopefully become a better grower.
So, the basic thought/logic surrounding this was to... "Reduce the chance of mould, & utilise the remaining moisture in the plant, by letting the plant dry slowly, from the inside out".
I think a slower dry with good air circulation, lower temps & "managed" higher humidity in the first days is a beneficial, a lot of moisture is retained in the plant (stems, buds & leaves).
The plant may still require some of this remaining moisture... Who knows ? But my logic tells me... If we reduce the Humidity down low straight away, the resulting "Humidity Void" that we create, will start to draw moisture from the center of the plant out.
This can dry the outside too quickly, trapping moisture inside the ever tightening and shrinking bud/stem. That to me is a hazard, a potential problem, it increases the chance of mould developing at a later stage of dry or during cure.
If it is possible to control airflow, humidity, temp and the speed/time it takes to dry, then I want to do it that way... I start slow with a Higher Humidity (to balance the Humidity Void") and gradually reduce it down when I see the moisture is reducing....
I do check on them frequently, maybe 10 times a day, and have temp & humidity sensors logging the data to my PC in real time (good bit of kit & not expensive).... If you haven't got that time to devote, then it may be more risky.
But "closely managed" this way presents no problems, only advantages, as I said.... "Many ways to skin a cat"........ this one is mine.
Hope that helps....
