Flushing vs. Flushing

Thanks for the clarification Muddy! Im new to growing and actually have yet to start my first grow. (waiting for taxes to come back in so i can get my tent setup purchased and running) That said I've been lurking around afn now for about a month and been reading everything i can get my eyes on. I found afn through a random post that came up on google with Dankor's first akr grow and was amazed at the community response to his journal. Anyway long story short I just wanted to say that this forum board has been the most interactive, co-operative, informational and friendly boards i have come across. thanks for all the great info AFN pros!

Thanks for clearing that up! now i know cleanse not 15 gallons of water for my bucket:dance:

Similar to Cres.
Growing w/ chems I don't "flush" until after the cut. (what he say? LOL)
Towards the last 5-7 days I revert to plain water.
After the cut,, I try and flush out the salts with boiling & fresh cool for re-use is all. Let drain and partially dry. Then mix 50:50 (old/new) and run again. Not so much for cost,, more like I'm running out of places to dispose of in the yard.

This is with AFs because they're only going 2 1/2 - 3 months at most.
With photoperiods I'll flush every 2 mos. because of the longer run time and I like getting fresh nutes in there.
Seems to work for me.

i think if anything it coudl be the otherway round,

flush meaning to flush everying away eg toilet flushes all away leaving it clean

where as clensing is a term for
Verb
Make (something, esp. the skin) thoroughly clean: "this preparation will cleanse and tighten the skin"; "a cleansing cream".
Rid (a person, place, or thing) of something seen as unpleasant, unwanted, or defiling

ridding unpleasant buildups clensing is a process making somthing clean and pure ready for whats next to come be it a new diet plan or a new lifestyle,

I think the OP (supermod) May have got it right with this one Auto hehe ^_^ there's already Too Much Confusion with new growers.
You've clearly already got a handle of what to do and when after 20 years of growing, but there's all the new members that come here and it can be confusing as hell when you first start out.

Not writing this to be contentious, just slimming back the options :)

Oh, and welcome to ths forums buddy! That's one hell of a setup you've got there - like a mini powerstation!

All the best

Blue ^_^

I understand your point but we're not talking dictionary definitions here, but how the terms apply to growing. In general flushing has always been associated with putting a large amount of water through the pot to deal with specific situations like over fertilizing, salt buildup, high/low pH, etc. Many members were getting confused and thinking they should run the same large amounts of water through their plants at the end of the grow. Hence the distinction, flushing to address a problem, cleansing to remove the last traces of nutrients at the end of the grow.

I think its a bit presumptuous to try to change the commonly accepted terminology- though i see why it would help new growers a bit- kind of. Problem being there are products - ie "royal flush" designed for the last 2 weeks of the grow. It's possible that it might be more beneficial to actually help them understand that the term flush can be used in different ways- for different situations. Like most other words. It's called "language"

I'm all for being helpful, but I personally feel like its probably better to educate through "elevating" a persons understanding rather than dumbing things down for an audience. Alright- actually I don't really care one way or the other- but this idea that information should come pre digested for the lowest common denominator has always bugged me- I am a firm believer in challenging students, or whoever, to use their minds and grow their analytical and problem solving skills.

Now if the industry has products out for "cleansing" in the last couple weeks of a grow- it does make a bit of sense to use that terminology- but otherwise all we are doing is moving the confusion from here- to the nursery or grow store or whatever- and making educating the new grower
A) someone else's problem
B) am even more difficult process.

Now- the reality is that growers who have English as a first language shouldn't have any trouble grasping that
A) flush can be used in several ways- and it is important to read AN ENTIRE SENTENCE OR EVEN (gasp) paragraph- in order to gain understanding of the context in which the term is used
B) that there are other terms- we call them "synonyms" which can be used (depending in context) interchangeably - in this case "cleanse"

This is just me though- and I hate one or two sentence posts telling someone what to do in a given situation, or posts that people put up to "answer" a question that go "I guess" or "I've never tried - but I heard" or "I read"

If I see. Question that falls into the realm of my experience- I answer based on my experience- and also try to include how I came to the conclusion- and offer ways o testing my conclusion- so that the grower with a question can then determine for themselves what makes sense in their own situation.

Anyways- like I say- this cleanse vs flush discussion isn't really anything I'm invested in- but I feel it's kind of indicative of a systemic problem in our society and in our education system- so I've made a whole lot out of what in this case is... Nothing.

I'm happy use both terms here on the forum.

And my final week- 10 day of the grow depends very much on the individual grow. I feed a fairly lightly- so it's typically not a huge issue- sometimes on the first grow or two of a strain ill end up with a more serious flush (cleanse)- just due to unfamiliarity with the strain- and how she eats.

Blah blah blah- ill go on about all this of I don't stop myself. Almost like I believe what I have to say is "important" hahaha

just read your post on flushing and may i add that muddy is trying to make a distinct difference between the to first what he is saying is it needs to be too different words flushing is use during the grow for these reasons overfeed , lockout ,ph problems, and when you switch from veg nute to flower nute cleansing and the intent of the word is for washing away all the chem. used during the grow and most importantly CLEANSING is a good way to be clear to other people the difference of the too...imo
