Does anyone have any tips on trying to dampen the noise from my extractor. It's cool during the day as all the background covers it up.Come late at night and I can notice it.My tent is in my shed on my garden. No $ at the mo till payday so need a cheap ghetto answer to my prob.Anyone out there kno how good these silencers are? Might get one on payday. But they are 40 quid. And if it doesn't do the job I'll be devo.

Hey red,Iv just installed acoustic ducting to my tents set up and it's quietened the air flow noise down a little, just get a little noise comin from the carbon filter but it's nice and quite, only have my fan on the lowest speed as it's a small tent..but if it's your fan making noise you could try making an acoustic box for it,iv seen some vidz on you tube showing you how to do it ghetto..:toke:

if you have a little money
buy a dimmer switch and to
power down and run quieter,
also wrap the motor and all exposed ducting
in either the rolls of shiny silver tape on insulation
duct tape
or wrap the ducting with bubble wrap, then duct tape ..over and over

the thicker the tape layer, the quieter
this is the cheapest way i can think of but,
probly not the quietest

They make ducting insulation that can be wrapped around the pipes to deaden noise:

My buddy has a really noisy inline fan and several layers of this stuff made a real difference.

Nice one guys. Ive got some 4in acoustic ducting but my fan is a cheap 5in one. I could get a reducer for it but would air flow be greatly restricted if i put 4in ducting to a 5in fan? Like the bubble wrap idea. Would need to get some and duct tape as Ive not enough here now. They are like £5 a roll at the hardwear shop! Must be cheaper somewhere else. That duct insulator looks like a quilt. Whats it made from? A quilt is an idea actually. If I wrapped wat I could up in the quilt, like the fan and exit ducting would it get so hot as to be a fire risk? Its just a cheap inline duct fan. Like the ones that go half way along a long peice of ducting to help out the main fan, I think.

redman, the duct wrap is made of regular household fiberglass insulation with a foil backing. It's just thinner than wall insulation to make it easier to wrap a pipe with it. Here in the States, it's around $5 for a 6 foot long roll. Fiberglass does not burn and it's got a melting point of 1800 degrees F, so if heat is a concern it's pretty safe. If you've got a hot pipe, wrapping it in something flammable like bubble wrap or a cloth blanket is probably not a good idea...

Usually it's the buffetting of the blade to air slam you're hearing....a speed control definitely gives ya the adjustability to lower the pitch of the sound sometimes to almost nothing. I run two 4" centri fans on speed controllers ....speed controllers helped cush the noise and also simply attaching a duct to the output end helps some.....
