If so how complicated was the process of getting permits licenses and all that.

Really depends on where you are.

California is a big no to "boutique" growers. Licensing will cost huge $ (several hundred thousand) ... any record and your not growing...
Have heard Oklahoma is doable, license costs for residents is more affordable, in the range of several thousand instead of hundreds of thousands.
Am a retired aviation mechanic, spent my career documenting every move I did with a wrench, and signing my life on it for the federal gov.
Canna is even more paperwork. Keeping track of every damn leaf and stem is not my idea of fun growing.

Easier and better, in my opinion, to find and grow for a medical coop.

In the heyday of the 70's, I was an base inspector of nuclear components where we documented even the consistencies of metals forged for the nuts and bolts of any nuclear installation..... multiply that by the mobile home size cooling coils and air handling equipment and you are getting close to how detailed any govt regulated formerly illegal substance is handled. IMHO...It would be a nightmare to get lined up with any dispensary as the cannabis industry is more regulated than any other. If you have the bucks, go for it.

Yeah, working on subs is the same way. Almost everything will have a controlled workpackage.
Regulation is good to a point. Healthy grown canna should be govt main reason for existance of regs..
The rest of regulations is nothing but a power grab in one form or fashion.

Only problem with Oklahoma is the total lack of reg has destroyed the industry. No balance. CBD growers were getting g 20 bucks a pound or something like that. No money in it there. Fuck dealing g with government shit. Grow for FnF and for the love of growing.

That's kinda what I thought when I read the law.

I grow commercially, but I don't own the grow. Licensing requirements vary from state to state, in Colorado it's honestly not that hard to get a license, it's all the other bullshit that goes along with it that gets to be expensive (and remember this is a federally illegal business at the end of the day, so you still can't write things off or treat it like a real business for tax purpose, etc.) Then you look at the cluster fuck that Missouri is going through, and man.... you could be a deity and still not get a license there.

On a side note, you can buy cannabis that I personally grew at Mesa Organics in Pueblo, Colorado  lol
