Not really a new grower question as much as new technique. Does anyone have a diy light dep set up with like a hoop house etc? I didn't know if there was a way you could could diy an automated set up so you don't have to be there to put a tarp over. Thanks

@Growtogrow had a diy light dep in one of his journals im sure you could have a look for it cant remember if it was automated

Q makes that shyte for Bond but we are mere mortals. The mechanics of something to block 100% of the light would be daunting in a DYI. And I just thought of something that might work a hoop house of light block materials on rails that covers a smaller hoop house of regular grow film Moved by a garage door opener/closer.

Stoner engineering :pass:

Bill Ward on YouTube did a outdoor grow last season where he started his flowering early using a homemade light deprecation system. Looked fairly simple.

Hey AFN.... yeah I've been doing light depth sense 2015. And blocking out 100% of the light is easy to do. And it doesn't matter if you block out the Sun early in the morning or if you do it late in the evening just as long as you have 12 hours of light or 13 hours of light in a day or you could even go the other way and do 11:10 or 9 hours of light in a day depending on how you want to grow its just got to subtract that light from your Daylight by using the tarp. I've done it all kinds of ways and it comes out great every time and 96% of time my plants never have any seeds from stress usually comes from the neighbor. It can be automated or it could be manual. There's technology to be found out they're all over the place. There's hundreds of YouTube videos on light dep technology and how easy it really is to do. Last year was my first year I haven't done light dep. And that is because I had too much going on and couldn't be married to my grow because I'm not automated. But there are automation devices if one wants to spend the money that can be completely automated that will cover a hoop house or anyting as long as you want to set it up for about eight hundred bucks you can do a very big grow. The hoop houses are probably the easiest ones to set up. Mine is rectangle takes a little more effort and I do it manually and it set up on pulleys and cables. Pretty simple as I am a pretty simple guy. But I like to grow a lot of weed. With a light depth here in central Michigan I can grow two crops easy three crops with a lot of work and I have to be married to that grow all summer long. Because again I Am manual. Automated is really easy there's a host of different types electric roll up devices that you can find right on Amazon. EBay and probably other places as well. Shop around you can find timers you can find the rollers you can find side rollers hoop rollers and can do a hoop house as long as150 ft.

This is, my older grows from yesteryear

So these pictures aren't in order but it represents a year of two harvests. I start usually around 4/20 it is usually cold so I use fires to keep my unit warm I have clear tarps at that time of year represented in the picture by the Milky looking white one and I run lights in there to extend my daylight so that I can maintain 18 hours of light until I'm ready to flip to 12 12. I usually flip around the 15th of June in order to catch the summer solstice on the 21st. I may change this idea if I run this again there's various reasons why I'm not going to go into them now. But you can easily Harvest that within eight weeks. You can have a crop in my case I can have a crop already to put in there as soon as I'm ready to harvest the first. I can actually Harvest plants and put another plant in it's place and keep tarping cuz I grow my next crop of plants in the yard. I use 25 gallon fiber pots of any kind as they are sacrificial. To cause low stress I just sliced the side of the pot and stick it all down in a hole and cut it all the way and then add my new soil around the plant in way I grow a plant is already large and just ready turn into flower at that time and I can guarantee Harvest as long as Im not running a super sativa by the end of September first week in October. Again it's very easy to do lite depth it's not hard but with that being said if you do it manually you are married to it. And I found it the easiest way for me to do it is a jump-start my crop and this would only allow me to run one crop a year but I can run a long-term sativas like a Neville's Haze that's 14 to 18 weeks of flower to maturity . this way by starting my flower. In early July and only be married to it for about 5 weeks when my sunlight changes here in Michigan around the 9th of August when we start seeing flower sign here on our cannabis plants. If you're going to do light dep it's fun and very rewarding. I averaged about 25 lb a season outside with only running between 8 and 12 plants per crop. I'm licensed for 24 plants.

Good luck with that. I would just forget photos. As @Mañ'O'Green says, getting rid of light leaks would be a serious challenge. The design of the edge seal would be part of the problem, the mechanics to achieve it reliably without tangles or jams another, and both of them would be bloody difficult. You would be hugely better off using your money, time, and patience designing your grow for autos.

Best of luck if you go for it, should make for some diy fun.

I know I could use a tarp or something it's just the issue of being there everyday at specific time.

Just thinking with photos I can get a higher yield with plant counts and all. Like I can get a plant ten times as big I hear you tho it's possible to get multiple grows with autos and maybe get same yield. I just saw other people use tarps but I don't want to worry about that for 2months.

I expect that you are right that you could grow more bud with photos if you could achieve light deprivation, but in my humble, not enough more to justify the extra hassle with a manual setup, or especially the expense, frustration, and screwed up grows likely before getting an automated system sorted. DIYing a system that works reliably would be an expensive and challenging project. Keep in mind here that you are talking about sealing the space against full power sunshine. That is a tougher to accomplish compared to an indoor tent that would never see that intensity of outside light, and even the indoor tent can be a challenge with light leaks.

If you don't want to do manual light dep, I would forget doing it at all. In your boots, automated top watering of autos is where my interest would be. For safety reasons with power interuptions, I would go with moderate sized pots, peat based medium, and top watered hydroponic nutes. Moderate to large pots with peat will give you more of a buffer if fertigation is delayed for a day or so by a power failure.

Good luck with it, have fun, and let us enjoy the show! :pighug:

I only grow indoors. That said my Yield over time with Autos vs. Photos is nearly equal. I can get almost 2 more auto crops in a year over the photos that makes the yields nearly equal.
